Howdy folks, Well, got back from the gym this afternoon and had a call from a neighbor about a snake in their yard. Can't believe it but getting to take photos of three snakes in one week is super cool. I already had pics of a big ole mature snake of this species, Eastern Hognose, but this is a younger example and much prettier. Light is not real good right now but here are a few pics anyway.....Mel Relaxed: Doing the patented cobra routine: Headshot: Smile snakey and show us your hoggy nose.

I love those! When I was a kid, I purchased one from a pet store that was ready to lay eggs and they didn't even know it! We didn't know either until it happened. The clutch was 27, 26 of them hatched! We also had a solid black hognose snake. They're the coolest.

I like all snakes .... theoretically. I like all little non-poisonous snakes.... really.

Not knowing much about snakes (except that first pic is really nice!) are hognose snakes in the pit viper family? I would mistake that for a "rattler" at a quick glance.

Baz: Nope, Hognosed snakes are harmless toad eaters. Not only don't have venom but hardly any teeth you can see. They engage in a lot of mimicry and theatrics to try to scare off predators. They fan out their ribs like a cobra, gape their mouth and fake bite, hiss, rattle their tail in the leaves and even roll over and play dead. This snake was found by some little girls and I taught them how to recognize and handle it. After getting over their initial discomfort, they flat fell in love with this gentle beast.....Mel

Great snake pics Mel! Hognose make the best pets of all snakes. Had one when I was younger.

Yep, you can't even "make" one of these bite you. Curt- if you think these are the best, I wish you could come up here and see my Savu python! Just as gentle, but with an intimidating look because she's solid black. We have 5 snakes, the coolest of all pets!

Wow, interesting. We have in our neighborhood what most around here call gopher snakes. Similar looking to that snake, I try to coax them out of the road when I'm on it but they hiss and shake their tails at me, mimicking a rattler I guess?

Baz: Yep, unfortunately that's why I do so many snake rescues. The dang harmless snakes do their best to mimic the poisonous ones and act dangerous and...... get themselves killed if they succeed. I always joke, my snake rescue is not rescuing people from snakes. It's rescuing snakes from people. Unfortunately, if a snake acts like a dangerous animal, a lot of folks are happy to do them in without a second thought. I spend a lot of time trying to educate folks to think before they kill and if in doubt, call me and I'll remove the beasty for them....Mel

Unfortunately, if a snake acts like a dangerous animal, a lot of folks are happy to do them in without a second thought. Where I'm from, a snake doesn't have to act dangerous. Growing up in Florida, I rescued a "Yellow" rat snake because someone swore that it could be a water moccasin. It was about to be done in by a shovel. My dad called the guy a dumbass. lol
