Howdy folks, Well, for a change I had me a free day. Was torn between going to the shooting range and going to hunt rocks over at the Eagle Pass gravel rock pile. Was jonesing for a rock day so the rocks won and I'm very glad because the pile was brand new and loaded with goodies. Here are a bunch of pics of some of my finds. thanks for lookin.....Mel Thee whole take. Found some huge Rio Grandes today. Couple of big Rio Grande agates: My favorite for the day. Baby fist sized but intense reds and awesomely patterned. Nice flower garden type moss/plume agate Whopping big orange and olive green orbicular jasper edge shot: Top showing orbs: Found another big hunk of that stuff that really looks like dino bone but is not Close look: Huge golden moss with fortifications and vugs: Big flint with clams and horn corals and a flint with a nice rosy pattern inside: Found a bunch of regular agates this time. Some may have plume. Right Rio Grande poppy type rhyolite and some brecciated jasper. Thought this was dendritic Limestone but it's more like a jasper and has more silica. And finally, another nice Rio Grande Moss and another with a fortification on top but moss if you turn it over:

Some gravel pile!!! Gravel around here is boring gray. Used to be green (Serpentine, our state rock) until they discovered problems with the asbestos content. VERY nice collection of gravel!

Wow... was the gravel in the pile river rocks? They didn't tumble them first? That is amazing!!

Helen: Yep, all this material is from a gravel pit along the ancient course of the Rio Grande River so it's quite river tumbled. This is cool as all the waste has been tumbled away but the drawback is it's all covered by dirt and sometimes caliche so it takes a lot of skill and squirt bottle work to find the good ones. This is the result of about three hours of digging and squirtin.
gr: It's used as decorative gravel and so is not in concrete but is in lots of parking lot flower beds in Texas. I found some prize examples in a neighbors flower garden....Mel

Awesome material, and digging a gravel pile still beats digging them out of clay. Woody

Dang nice looking rocks! Did you find them with the ends sliced off so you could see what they looked like?! Hmmmmm, just kidding! ;D I can never figure out why no one ever used rock like that down here for gravel.

Sigh. Here in Salem they got a gravel company what dredges rock outa the Willamette river. Sadly, cause of liability they wont let anyone out to their piles. I'm thinkn some day a road trip too my cousins place in the pan handle. Later Clyde
