I just ordered 4 gallons of mineral oil for $43.95 total including shipping. It's coming from Santa Cruz Biotechnology in CA. The only place for me to get it here without driving for 2 hours is 45 min away & is $18 plus. I think that's a pretty good deal! Here's the link in anyone wants to check it out. www.scbt.com/datasheet-359654.htmlUnfortunately they only had 1 gal in stock, which they are going to go ahead & ship, then ship the balance when the rest comes in, no extra shipping charge.

I'm curious on how it compares to Pella. The food grade oil I got from Johnson Brothers is noticably thicker than Pella and I am thinking it might not filter out in brown bags the way pella does.

Got the first gal of mineral oil, looks like water in the jug. It is the light mineral oil, aka horse laxitive, which is what I am using now. Haven't had the pleasure of changing the oil yet so I don't know how it's going to filter through a brown bag! Thought it was a darn good price though considering the closest feed store wanted 19 bucks for a gal.

What about shipping? That usually adds a lot to oil prices. That is a good price for food grade oil.

It was $9.00 a gal with $7.99 shipping. If you spent $50.00 shipping was free!!!!!!!!

I usually go to walmart and get like 8 pints for about 10 from the pharmacy, works pretty well so far :-)

I would have bought 6 gallons. Better to buy oil than shipping.

Excellent price, Donnie. I pay $12 gal at Atwoods and Tractor Supply (because they will price match) plus tax.

I've seen the mineral oil type hydraulic fluid at Tractor Supply for $23.00 for a 5 gallon bucket. Gotta watch their sales.

Hydraulic may have a little (or a lot) odor but should work OK if viscosity is low enough. The food grade mineral oil would be more user friendly. My dad closed his rock shop and retired to the desert way back when. He used Pella oil (now I know what it is) in his tractor. Had to be left over store stock.

Hydraulic oil will work but it has additives designed to keep dirt, or rock snot in suspension so it can be pumped through the filter on hydraulic equipment, so it gets picked up and carried between rock and blade with the oil, wearing the blade much faster. As they say, pay me now or pay me later. With pella the rock goes to the bottom so it's relatively easy to clean out the saw and reclaim some of the oil. Viscosity: to get the longest blade life you need a viscosity of ISO 15 or less, pella is ISO 6.1, the food grade oils closer to ISO 12 or so. Not to be confused with automotive viscosity SAE, 5wt SAE is about ISO 35.

Easy solution, stop cutting. - . . . Sounds like being in Hell! Water will rust your equipment. For years I used USED transmission oil -free from Tunex etc. Problem = keeps particles in suspension, wears the blade, is a mess, and has to be thrown away. Transformer oil may contain PCB Anti-Freeze will kill your pets, and probably you. Mineral oil seems the best answer, but it HAS TO BE LIGHT! I just found, have not tried: www.bulkapothecary.com/raw-ingredients/bulk-natural-oils/mineral-oil/?gclid=CJqzyPGf0LoCFWnZQgodfBUAVg"Bulk Mineral Oil SKU:bna-38 Brand:Bulk Apothecary Shipping:Calculated at checkout Choose Your Options * Size: 1 lb - $2.97 7.5 lb - $13.97 30 lb - $53.97 How does pounds compare to gallons? Is this in solid form? I was just perusing: mcrocks.websitetoolbox.com/post/rock-saw-oil-1960812A brief Quote: "Donna N Posted 06/16/07 #12 Ive used several different oils over the years.....and I run my saws only outside in a shed now due to rebellion of the lungs inside. Have used Pella, then Almag, then tried the anti-freeze that is used in motorhomes which left me with more problems in lungs, then back to Almag and now Iam using a mineral oil that they use for irrigation systems called Citation 90 which runs about $8. a gal. No discoloring, nice cutting, about the best I know of until I hear otherwise. Any comments of this product folks? They say we can cook in it.... safe to eat.......but curious what others have to say. Our supplier here sells it in 5 gal containers at $40. Anyone for french fried stone slab? Well, I will say that although the price went up on the gal of mineral oil from 9 to 14, the shipping is still free when you buy 4. That makes it still a very good deal, especially for me down here in the Florida Keys.

Just looking at the site again, It appears 1 lb = 1 gallon (or quart?), 7.5 lb = 5 gallons, 30 lbs = ??

With water, 1 gallon is 8 pounds. Oil is lighter, so the 7.5 pounds is one gallon. 1 lb. is a pint (remember the old expression "a pint's a pound the world around"?). The 30 lb would be 4 gallon.

I've been using Covington's "Rockhound Oil" on my saw. Pretty much just a light mineral oil, I think. It's pricey, but I love that it has almost no odor at all. (When I was slabbing at my club, I hated the lingering odor that the oil they used caused. Two days after I was cutting I'd still catch wiffs of the oil.)

I still have stinky old Pella oil. It is maybe the best performance oil ever. Sludge settles out easily. Stinks to high heaven. 2-3 days in kitty litter, overnight in heavy duty degreaser. Wash with soap/water. Slabs in pans of water will have an oil film floating on the water. My hands will smell for days no matter how many times I clean them. Wonderful stuff.
