The gear box cover on the front of my 18" Lortone saw started leaking a few weeks back. Last night I got the brilliant idea of tighening the three bolts that hold it to the front of the saw. Oil started just pouring out of it at that point, so I drained the remaining oil out of it and pulled it off. They had used some thin gasket material to seal it off, that definately wasn't from the factory. My question is what is the best thing to use to seal this unit when I reassemble it? Gasket material again, silicone gasket, or something else? Robert

I would use gasket material with silicone spread over it to make it form fitting.

Actually that probably was factory. From my experience with Lortone machines they used the cheapest they could to sneak away. On the highland park's, Frantoms ect... The grease box on the rear which houses the worm gears. I take those off, clean very well with brake cleaner scrub it down and use a heavy automotive silicon such as RTV. Then rather than filling the cases back up with grease I use chainsaw bar oil. It's thicker than oil, yet thin enough to keep the gears lubed.
Grease is a terrible idea.. After awhile the gears will cut holes in the grease and it stops lubing the gears....

I will not use grease, because of the reasons that rockhoud957058 stated. I use 90 weight gear oil that seems to do a good job of lubricating everything. I have reassembled the gear box with a gasket and silicone as Tony suggested. I will put the gear oil in it later on this morning. Hopefully it doesn't leak. Thanks again everyone for the input. I use industrial gear lube that doesn't have such a sulfur smell like automotive gear lube, I think it's 90/120 wt
