Well our kids' last day of school was today. Our oldest is now a 7th grader, and summer is here.
We had planned on going up to Nebraska this weekend and helping with the big branding that my cousins do every year out on the cattle ranch. As it turned out, we were all exposed to a pretty not-fun bug this week and are most likely contagious, so with a lot of kids upset we called off the trip.
My oldest wanted to go out with just me so we grabbed a bucket and headed out to pawnee grasslands.
We arrived to the overcast sky finally starting to break apart
within 2 minutes we had a dozen or so Colorado agates and some epidosite. This was a new place to us and from the end result I'd guess no one has hounded it.
We looked around and the cactus were in bloom, it was a really pretty evening on the prairie.
Here is our oldest. It was pretty windy out there. She was enjoying finding lots of iron oxide concretions.
After a couple hours she started yelling to come see a lizard. It was a horned toad.
She is pretty fearless and after me assuring her it wouldn't hurt her she picked it up.
It calmed right down and she carried it around for a few minutes and named it "Mellow"
The sky kept showing off for us.
Our kids generally get a kick out of some unique iron oxide concretions called Moqui Marbles. We found a good number of them. (moqui marbles: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Navajo_Sandstone)
We headed out as the sky started getting dark.
and we were treated to a really nice sunset on the way home.
We ended up with a half a bucket (~25#) of agate, jasper and epidosite that will tumble nicely. We had a lot of fun and it was a good start to summer.
