Went for a drive today,to check out the river levels. They are getting about right for rock picking,so I went to see if the place I usually go to was dry yet. As soon as I pull into the site,I see signs up...No traspassing, active mining in use! They must be going to reclaim the gravel pits there.... Now I can't get to my river bed of good hunts-!!!! I might have to do some recon in a different area to get to it or find a new area!!!

Might be worth a try to see if the owner would let you go in and hound just a little. Wouldn't be like you're in competion for his profits. Maybe his wife needs a polished stone pendant?

Most gravel quarry operations have an oversize pile, they may or may not crush. If they are not crushing the oversized material you may get very lucky and be allowed to pick through it. Woody

Well today I took a drive over to the area I rock hunt and asked the owner if I could rock hunt the gravel shore line by the river............He said "well those signs are up there for a reason!" "What exactly do you want to do on my land?".....I told him flat out,"I want to hunt agate and petwood on the river banks"... He than said,"You a rockhound?'.All the sudden he says-"Hey so am I"! Told me to go ahead and hunt anywhere by the highway bridge....."YAHHHHHHHH"!!! We BS'ed for a bit than he(Ray) showed me his collection of agates and petwood. All raw and some nice stuff I might add. Told me to come by on Sundays and he would show me some other areas that have some great colors too......... As I was leaving he yells,"Hey,thanks for asking friend".....

Awe! This is great! It's funny how many people are into rocks. You never know until you say something! Good luck with the hounding and have fun with your newfound friend!

Good going, Mike! Wherever we go rockhounding, the comment is "You rockhounds are the friendliest people!"
The other thing we're known for is our persistence! Never give up, and always keep your smile.
Thanks for doing the good work, Mike!

Agree with the above. Talking rocks with strangers opens lots of doors, and makes friendly connections.
