Someone has posted some rough that I like on ebay. I formerly bought gemstones on ebay, mostly shipped from the orient. I was cheated every time, and ebay supported the thieves because they were big sellers, paying ebay lots of commissions. Several sent me "gemstones" that they had made of plaster. Others substituted cheap stones for the more expensive that they advertised. The best deal was one person (in tbe US) who sent me the stones that I had ordered, but he had lied a out the size.
Now quailriver has some things that I want. He accepts no returns, and has had very few bids. Has anyone bought from quail river. It is not discussed on good, bad, ugly. If you prefer, you could send me a PM.

All small sellers have few bids, because eBay has changed the search so that only the biggest sellers can be found and get page views. Everyone who is a "real" person is upset about eBay allowing sales from large drop shippers or whatever they are -- they sure aren't genuine rock hounds! I am myself a seller not a buyer until I clear house a bit more, but I have seen Quailriver around the forum and I get a sense of a genuine person.
I have suggested to some of my friends who "used" to sell on eBay back in the good old days to post something for sale and then just track how many page views they get. It's shocking. It's possible not to get any views, even for a person with 100 % positive feedback. Also, as far as "very few bids" are concenred, the majority of so-called auctions will get zero or one bid, no matter who you are or how highly rated, so this is not a good metric for judging a seller.

Everyone who is a "real" person is upset about eBay allowing sales from large drop shippers or whatever they are I think the technical terminology is "Chinese". It's hard to compete with someone who has a machine that pumps out 100 cabs a second and puts them on Ebay at a nickel each when I'm doing a cab in 15 minutes. You'll never see 150,000 feedbacks on my account, I won't do that many cabs in my life. Yep, this is the kind of sh*t that I think about all the time.

I never buy by the number of sales a seller has had. I go by his or her feedback. If they have at least 98% positive feedback I'll try them with a small purchase. If I'm happy, then I'll increase my next purchase from that seller. Yesterday I bought 2 Fairburn agates from a seller with less than 1500 sales. I have several more Fairburns in my watch list by the same seller, but won't buy again until I see the quality of my first purchase.

When searching ebay switch from "Best Match" to items ending soonest or whatever type of search you wish. Best match isn't really best, it's ebays way of rewarding sellers who kiss ebays collective @$$. You can also remove overseas sellers by using the sidebar and selecting North America or US only. I used to sell on ebay but the fees and general poor treatment of smaller sellers drove me away.

Not all Chinese sellers are bad and not all mass production Chinese sellers are even bad - trouble is, enough of them are, and the time it takes to get product makes resolution all the more difficult et al. Sad to say, despite the fact that I have nothing against the Chinese as a people - I avoid anything on eBay that has 'Chinese' or 'China' or anything remotely related in it. Perhaps this already exists and I haven't seen it, but I would love to see a list of eBay sellers trusted by this forum that included lists of what they currently have up for auction (I've seen some sites do this - there must be an app or something for it). I try to keep a list of sellers but so many things going on in my life - not as easy as it might have been when I was 20 years younger.
