Hi, my name is Frank - I know some of you here but many many many I do not. I've been a lurker here for about a year (did you feel like you were being watched? ) and thought I ought to join in on the fun. I own two flat laps, a 10" tile saw with a Barranca 303C blade (that officially makes it a rock saw, mmmhhhmmm, I read it in my head somewhere), some rotary tools and tons of cheap diamond burrs and probably a few other things I'm drawing a blank on now... Oh - and a lot of rock for the space (think shoulder cramps) I'm using. I plan on buying a tumbler if I can just stop buying rock for a month or two. I'm fairly set on a vib but - anything is subject to change I reckon. I've only been doing this a little over a year. I began with sandpaper and files making palm and worry stones (and egg-shaped things). I've been cabbing for four or five months now I think (not long) but it's coming along well. I'm a member of the lapidary / gemstone forum (what the heck IS the formal name of that place?), which is where I learned to cab, and a great many other things. If you want a rather chaotic view of some of my play (work? sha... right) hit my flickr stream: www.flickr.com/photos/modeldaughters/I look forward to being here, meeting new people, learning from you all and sharing what I know. -frank-

Welcome, Frank. Yes, I could feel you lurking - lol! I did the same thing, watched for a while before jumping into the fray. I think you'll like it here! Jean
PS - Looks like we've got some new competition for the Killer Cab Contests!

Hey Kurt - pics? Nothing special but okay (click any pick for a larger view - most go VERY large if you keep on clicking...): First thought from some was that this was Morrisonite but I've worked with Morissonite since doing this and it's definitely not - this is far less brittle. But just what is it...? Some type of porcelain JasperSame cab as last. It's a pillow-type cut but has an appearance more like an envelope. This one was serendipitous but I've since been trying to refine it and a few variants. A pillow-type styleMorrisonite. Look at the lower right quadrant - two figures to the right and one just left of center all looking down. Above them a bright star with a streamer coming down. Theology? Ancient aliens? A rock? Morrisonite - Stone 2 Side AFlip side. Jungle scene? Upper right - lion? Morrisonite - Stone 2 Side BProud of this - got Mushroom Jasper to take a water wet shine. Didn't capture as much red as I'd have liked (fractures forced grind-down trimmer than expected). Could have left at 170 grit as it looked exactly like a very old bone carving - neat material, wish I could find more of this quality at a price that leaves me a limb. Mushroom JasperI do almost all cabs two sided - an old habit - I started with palm stones and now nothing quite seems right if you can't choose either side just by flipping it over. Not sure I'll catch this one but I am looking forward to the KCC here - last I looked it seemed you get lots of entries - there's the fun! Don - I'm in Colorado Springs - not far from Old Colorado City (the cockeyed part of town - literally turned 45 degress on the map). Nice to meet you all!
