Interesting Don!!! The oil residue isn't sticky?
And does it last indefinitely, or must be re-done (when?)?
And finally... is it a real 'wet look' or a more satiny sheen?

All of the excess is wiped off.
It needs to be redone about once per year
It's more of a satiny sheen. It enhances the colors without giving the piece an artificial polished look.
Some people wax their display pieces. I've found that over time wax takes on a yellow color, and is almost impossible to remove without soaking the piece in denatured alcohol over night. The baby oil washes right off with a little dish soap and water, and an old worn out toothbrush.

Oh kewl!!! I still prefer a more permanent solution (polishing my rocks with hxytal), but for specimens that cannot be polished again, your solution sounds AWESOME!!! I have a few really pretty pebbles I want to try that on!! Thanks for the info:).

Helen, I oiled some this morning. Here are before and after pics of one of them. First before oiling. After oiling. Not a real big difference, but the oiling does make the fortifications and colors stand out more.

A few more taken after oiling. In the bottom pic, the pale one at back, you could barely see the patterns before oiling. That one is solid Fairburn, with almost no matrix attached. Patterns all the way around. Not a very colorful Fairburn, but a real prize.

Latest addition to the collection. An ebay win. Probably paid too much for it, but oh well. I wanted it.

Man, I gotta slow down. I just ordered a $200.00 Fairburn from a friend who's selling a few off. It's easily a $300.00 stone, so I got a good buy on it. I'll post a pic when it gets here later this week.

Yup. Know what you mean Bill. When I moved from California to South Dakota, I gave well over a ton of rocks away, and brought a ton with me. I think I have more rocks now, than I did before the move. Who knew that rocks multiplied just like rabbits ?

Couple of my little Fairburns. These are valued at about $8.00 - $10.00 each. Just to give an idea of the value of nice stones, showing a full face pattern. Dime laying between them for size.

And a larger one. Not acid cleaned yet. Colors should be crisp after proper cleaning.

Love showing them Bill. This one just arrived. It still needs an acid bath. That hole in the first pic is full of rust stained quartz crystals.

I'm working on getting a nice big colorful one. Gotta get my paypal account caught up before I buy it. Hope I can get out to the grasslands this fall and find a few myself. Too hot out there right now, and those buzz tail snakes get cranky when it's hot. Got a couple places to check, that not many know about.

Couple of desirable black and white Fairburns. Some collectors specialize in only black and whites.

Don, I have a question about the fairburn... I noticed that Elementary polished one face of his specimens... does it take value away from fairburns (or lakes) to polish only 1 face so it's shiny?
