i am going to order some diamond drills in the morning....i have finished pendants...i know thats problem 1.
since i have finished pendants...i am ordering all different size drills....hoping to work my up from small to a little larger hole size a little at a time...to minimize chipping.
has anyone tried this?....the holes will be for wrapped bails that im going to try.....or am i looking at chipping all the way around?
i will not be able to hide any chipping...or rough edges...thoughts?

Grout the stones to a tile to do the drilling. It will minimize the back blow out. With diamond drills, HIGH SPEED! Slow speeds tears the diamonds off the drill. With drilling stones, the backside of the stone tends to blow out. The grout makes a thicker layer so the stone does not know it is drilled through. Grout is easy to remove with a quick tumble, or Cratex wheel.

I use hardened copper wire impregnated with grit. There is a tutorial in the forum on that one also. I like it better than diamond bits.

Sounds like this would be something to do after shaping but before polishing?

I drill some pre-polish. ALso, I top drilled some polished stones and put in a small eye screw - looks good on some stones.
Get a bunch of the 1mm diamond drills from cyberrockhound.com, then get the small tapered diamond drill for Dremmel. THe taper will help you clean up the edges ofthe hole as well as widen the hole.

I drill a lot of Polished stuff- Chipping is a problem but if you work slowly (I.E. DO NOT USE A LOT OF PRESSURE) it can be minimal- the back blowout is an easy fix as Doc stated- I also use a Dremel to drill (freehand) if you start the bit at a bit of an angle then SLOWLY bring it up to the upright position you can avoid the drill "walking" across the face of the stone (it also helps with the chipping) Practice on a few Junk stones first- also watch out for the softer stuff- the diamonds can be very aggresive in the softer stones (Sodalite always gives me a heck of a time) and the bits have a tendency to "load up" with dust and overheat (thereby ruining the diamond to metal bond and basically ruining the bit)

All this just answered some questions that I've been wondering about!

Dremel's first attemp at a drill press attachment did exactly that. The little table traveled up and down about an inch, if memory serves. These are quite often available on ebay.

hey space...if you get a chance could possibbly provide a description on what i should as a search for 1 of these...i cant seem to find 1 on ebay at this time.
i dont like the idea of pulling down on a handle....when i can make something that would move the diamond bit...slowly accuratly...and smoothly.
now that i think about it...i can make something to move the dremel itself downward...slowly..accuratly...and constant..using any type press i beleive.
im just thinking ..im trying eliminate any jerk or yank...that may cause a busted drill...or unneccassery chipping by pulling on a handle..
i can do this by threads per inch...on whatever design i try..i could make the rock or dremel move so slow that it would take a week to get thru a 1/4 thick peice.
fire some ideas back...im just thunking.
