Have not had a lot of luck with the weather. It's been raining every day for the past 3 weeks. That is a pain in the rear as I have to cut outdoors. So a solution was to go back to my first love, Fire Agate. The first one is covered to the excess of 70% of color, but I tried too hard and cut through several attractive colors. Luckily it seems that thing has endless layers of colors. Not bad at a seize of 4 cm length and colors back and front No picture of the back yet as I'm still condsidering on carving something out of the back. The second was easy go as I just had to sleize off the top. Preform Some of the bubbles And then I saw two areas that need reworking So that still needs to be done until the weather clears up. And then finally on to the next project Day 1 Thanks for looking, have a great and productive week, Kurt

Beautiful fire agate KK. Is that a gecko I see peeking it's head out of the black stone? Jim

Thanks everyone, Beautiful fire agate KK. Is that a gecko I see peeking it's head out of the black stone? Jim Yep, will be a lizard of sorts, if things work out (is the soft nonmagnetic dark sample coming your way Jim). Its a bit on the large side, so placing the legs and having it fit on a chain will be a bit of a challenge. Never mind though, in the end, its a test-run for trying out the subject on some Indonesian Chrysolla after this one. The fire Agates are OK, but still made too many mistakes, cutting through some desirable colors only to find lesser colors underneath. As always, playing the colors, needs regular practice and that leads to intuition that can not be missing when working this material. PPorky: Since I started with FA, I always try to keep true to form. I have no idea as to how Christopher and others manage to get those perfect edges when shaping their cabs into regular shapes.

Nice work Kurt. I also prefer following the natural shape of the color layers. I find that you lose too much color with cabbing this material. This is the biggest problem I have with over-aggressive windowed rough as well...by the time the windower has stopped to look at the piece, he's already blown through several good layers of color and there's no longer a natural contour of complete layers to follow and carve out. All you can do at that point is cab it up and hope for the best.

Love your fire agates, kk! You shouldn't down rate your work!! What material are you using to carve the lizard? Hematite?

Love your fire agates, kk! You shouldn't down rate your work!! What material are you using to carve the lizard? Hematite? I don't know what material it is. Its one of the things that I found last month. Very soft (for me), but does not crack or fracture easely. Possibly slate??? Welcome to the forum Denise. You will find lots of people here to talk. Show them your wonderful work.

I love those Fire Agates Kurt. You are correct when you say that it takes practice and intuition when cutting this material. I am very impressed with your carving. I am awaiting the photos that follow on your progress on the reptile.
