Since I used up all of my Lavic before moving to S.D., I'm gonna save one nice piece for a display specimen, and put a couple cabs with it. May be some slabs to go in the next traveling rock box too.

Isn't really that hard to do. The ceramic or oak inserts in the knobs pop right out. They use cheap glue on them. Takes a little time to make the cabs. The worst part is cleaning all of the glue out of the recess in the knobs. The last time I made these, I roughed up the recess in the knobs with 80 grit sand paper, and left the backs of the cabs rough. Then just glued them in with epoxy. The one I posted the pic of has stayed together for about 18 years now.

It was probably the old lady at the UPS Store I handed the box off to. It was heavy. Glad it made it in one piece. That rock is fresh off the Mojave. Goober didn't even get a chance to pee on it. I see the Last Chance hamburger rocks made it ok. You have a lot of slabbing to do. Sharpen your blade. As you know, this stuff is hard. Have fun!

That's what it will look like around here for a while. I'll work all of the cabs in one stage at a time, so I don't have to do a cleanup more often than needed. Got a pile of dop sticks and a fresh stick of dop wax standing by. I'll probably cut around 30 cabs because 1 or 2 are bound to have a hidden crack or void.

Looking forward to seeing that slabbed up. Make a fresh pot of coffee and we'll keep our eye on the Slabbing section for your next post. That's a lot of work. Jake will be upset because he won't be receiving much attention. Goober would be chomping on his squeak toys, shoving them into my legs. Poor Jake.

Oh, Jake will let me know when he wants attention. He'll just turn around and back his butt up to my leg, wanting me to scratch it for him. Gonna have 2 saws running at the same time. Got a box of material to slice up for Mike - Fossilman too. Supposed to be in the low to mid 90's all next week. I'll have to do my slabbing in the morning and evening.

Time to get the ball rolling. My friends arrived at their new house yesterday. Turns out that they need 28 knobs, and the box I ordered only had 26. Not to worry. The ebay seller had plenty more. I just ordered another 10.
I'll add pics of the progress from time to time, and see if my friends will send a link to a pic after the knobs are installed.
Now I need to get slicing, and dig my circle template out of hiding.

Update on this project. Diane asked if she could have the ceramic inserts I removed from the knobs. Today this came in the mail. Thank you Diane. ![](http://i907.photobucket.com/albums/ac274/jakesrocks/101E0603.jpg) None of my templates had the needed 27 mm hole size, and of course nobody in this podunk town carries drafting supplies, so I ordered this one online. Now I have all kinds of mm sizes. ![](http://i907.photobucket.com/albums/ac274/jakesrocks/101E0604.jpg)

too bad you don't have a core drill that size that you could core the rough to get rods and then slice them up to cab

Great idea frog. If the slabs are the right thickness all you would have to do is drill with no need to slice. I save all the plugs from my ring drilling so I can make ear rings out of them. Core drills come in just about every size imaginable. Jim

Lavic jasper tends to have cracks and vugs. I'd probably have to drill a whole bunch before I got the 28 I need for the project. Better to mark them and trim them out of the most solid parts. And then there's the problem of finding a core drill with the needed 27 mm inside diameter, since core drills are measured by their outside diameter.
