A while back I posted a pic of some cabinet knobs I had made for a project while working for Fleetwood Motor Homes design shop. The knob pictured has been kicking around in a box of junk for about 18 years, and is pretty scratched up. A very dear friend of mine who is moving soon to a new home saw the pics and commented that she and her husband would love to have a set for their house. I found similar knobs on ebay, and ordered them. When they get here, I'll have to soak them in acetone for a couple days to remove the round ceramic inserts. Then I'll have 25 round cabs to cut and polish. After I've finished epoxying the stones into the knobs, and given everything a final polish, I'll mail them to my friends as a house warming gift. I'll post pics later of progress I've made on this project / gift.

That is one hell of a gift just from the time spent but with that stone added it is a double hell of a gift. Must be damn good friends and you are one hell of a friend for doing it. Going to be great to see the progress. Jim

Jim, they're rock hound friends from near Denver. The husband just retired, and the wife has a partial disability. Great folks that would do anything for you, so I don't mind doing something nice for them.

What a perfect gift! A rockhound friend redid his kitchen, removed the tops of his old knobs and made cabs to fit. Now the coffee cups are in the jade cupboard, the plates in the red jasper cupboard etc

Very cool Don! You gave me an idea to make some pet wood knobs for an old dresser I am refinishing. Bill

Great project Don. Did you know Fleetwood shut down the Riverside operations a few years back and moved to Mexico? A friend's brother was the controller. All the RV companies in Hemet just closed a few months ago too. Soon we'll have to jump the southern border fence to get a job!
Uh, circle cabs. That is the shape I dread the most. No room for error, which I make a lot of. Yours came out perfect.

Can't say I'm surprised they shut the design facility down. About 3/4 of the assembly workers couldn't speak a word of English. Guess they sent them home to work.
I've never had a problem with round cabs. I hate doing hearts though. If those folks say they want red cabs, I might have to hit you up for a supply of Lavic. Turn my hands red one more time before I go to feed the worms. lol

Hey Don, I'd be more than happy to supply you with all the Lavic jasper you need. But the problem is, I think you and Mel gathered the last of the good stuff. All I have is the dark brownish red, burgundy colored rock. Also the peanut butter light brown. I've seen very little bright red like you have. Currently exploring around and will be heading out this Sunday or Monday to new unexplored areas near Boron. Need to find some clean bright red jasper. A arctic cold spell is hitting the Mojave and temps will be dropping to the low 90's.
Oh, we have a new neighbor that moved in down the street. Guess what kind of dogs they have? A Rat Terrier & Jack Russell! Like putting a alligator and crocodile together! And they're well behaved. One who isn't is Goober! He goes nuts every time he sees them.

Got the knobs today, and have removed the ceramic inserts. If anybody has use for the ceramic inserts, give me a shout. Otherwise they'll go in the trash. They are 27 MM Dia. X 7 MM thick with a nice dome and well glazed. There are 26 of them. Now all I have to do is cut slabs, trim cabs, and grind and polish 26 - 28 MM round cabs.

Don, are you gonna do them all in the same rock, or make 'em all different?

Larry is sending me a box of Lavic jasper to make them out of. My friends loved the look of the Lavic material.

We were heading out north of Boron exploring some remote areas with Christopher but had a change in plans. Diane, Goober and myself will be heading out to Lavic to find some nice fresh material for you this Sunday. You'll be mailed another box. Hope Bluesky Susan left some for us!!!! Actually, we'll be 4 wheeling way past the "sand trap" and getting deep into the remote area where few go. No broken beer bottles, clay pigeons & shot gun shells. Just virgin Lavic desert hills & gullies full of jasper, I hope. Your mailman will be upset with all the heavy boxes being delivered to your place. He'll think that long haired hippie looking guy must be up to something!
