I have one of the old style split metal sanding wheels that uses flat carbide belts that you fit into the slot then tighten. For some reason, people kept plishing on it when there was no belt, and now the foam rubber base is shot. Does anyone know where I can buy some rubber to restore this wheel? Or does anyone know where to buy the liquid rubber that the various companies use to make Nova style wheels? I can go either way with this wheel. Thanks! Phil

Covington still sells the sanding belts in 100, 220, 320, 400, 600 and 800 grit. I'll bet if you contacted them, they'd have the replacement rubber backing too. I've heard of people cutting strips for old worn out divers wet suits. The rubber in the suits is supposed to be ideal for backing sanding drums and discs. Just checked my Covington catalog. Item # CSR325 is a 3" X 25-1/2" sponge rubber belt that would work. In my 2010 - 2011 catalog it was $4.40 per belt.

Yes, Covington still uses split drums on at least one of their units so they stock the rubber and rolls of SC paper.

Thanks! Covington or old dive suits. Probably going to have to go Covington, as dive suits are extremely rare in New Mexico USA.

McMaster Carr sells adhesive backed neoprene foam. You can put it on and turn it down very carefully until it takes a regular belt, or just go back to the rolled abrasive the wheel was designed for. If you want to turn it down, use 100 grit sandpaper. It's a very touchy job. Be patient.

Maybe "Dive" suits are rare in MN, but in the summer, Costco sells wetsuits for playing at the lake or river. You do have those in MN, right? I often find used ones at thrift stores.

Lynn Sorry Lynn, wrong state. NM not MN. The only diving we do here is dirt diving when the cartels are fighting it out.... <grin>.
