A while back I bought a four canister grit assortment distributed and labeled by Lortone. They are 5 lb. buckets of grit. It came with 60/90 Sil, 120/220 Sil, AO Prepolish and AO polish. What I am wondering is what is the grit size for the Prepolish? I believe it is 1000, and I looked on the Lortone web page and that did not state the size of the polish, I did a search on this sight and could not find the size of it, and a google search with no results. I am wondering how this prepolsh differs from 600 Sil that I also use. I know the AO Pre polish works well, and it works great in rotaries, but wouldn't a jump from 120/220 to a 1000 grit seem like a lot? But it does work great. I also have a 1lb. bag of AO that I purchased a while back that just says 1000 Aluminum Oxide in black magic marker. Would this be the same as the Lortone Prepolish? I have tried to use this to polish agate and only got a satin finish on agate. Is this the same stuff as the Lortone Prepolish? I have polished the Agates after using the 1000 AO and it gets a great shine. Any help at all will be appreciated. I usually when tumbling let my barrels roll for a month after the last charge of 60/90 Sil from Kingsley and skip all the other grit changes and go straight to Polish then. Now I am using a Lot-O and well appreciate any help at all, not that I don't mind experimenting with things. Thanks.

I would guess the prepolish is 1000,but could possibly be 500 or 600.When I bought lortone grit 25 years ago,the cans were just listed as coarse, fine, prepolish and polish.Dont think any grit size was listed. Now that I think about it,the 1000 ao looks finer than what Lortone had. What works for me is 60/90 in rotaries,Lortone 12 lbers, let run extra week after last charge, and go to 1000.Smaller rotaries would take longer to break the grit down.I have one lot-o in 1000 ao,and one in polish. Those lotos will spoil ya.I run them in 3 day cycles normally.

Pre polish is very confusing. They probably include something like 600 and call it pre polish. Use it the same as silicon carbide 500 or 600. To most people "pre polish" step is after that and before polish. 1000 or 1200 alumina or powdered tripoli.
