On our trip in May to South Texas we stopped at South Padre Island for a few days. This is one of my best bird in flight shots so far. If you think focusing on a bird in flight ain't a big deal, give it a try. ;D Curt

Seeing all the detail in the feathers is awesome, and look at his eye! They really are graceful in the sky. Congrats on the shot, I know how hard it is. Jo

Wow, cool pelican! Good job on the moving shot. We have pelicans up here but they are white.

Thanks guys!
Stu I have a Canon Rebel T3i and shot this with a 250mm lens.
Bill The white pelicans are migratory and come through here on occassion. The brown ones stay put.

We've been getting pelicans just like that coming through colorado springs, CO. since about 2008 (that I've seen anyway). Very odd - been here my whole life and never saw one until '08. This year they seem to be hanging around little longer. Climate change or re-route due to prey shortages?

p.s. I have tried focusing on a bird in flight like that and it's damned hard - at least with my equipment (Canon Rebel Xsi). One trick I found is to figure out the general height birds are flying at in the area you ant to cap one, auto-focus on something the same distance away then take 'auto-focus' off. Mixed results but interesting.
