I'm in the reordering mode. What if any difference is there between 500 grit aluminum oxide and 500 grit silica carbide. I realize the are different material but to the function exactly the same? Are they interchangable? Do you prefer one over the other? Thanks Bill

There are people here who swear by both. I use silicon carbide. My understanding is that aluminum oxide rounds off as it "fractures" while silicon carbide breaks with angles so remains a more effective "smoothing" agent. I can see where the aluminum oxide might be better for softer stones, but am too imprecise to keep both kinds. Either way you go, some tumblers have been very happy doing the same!

I have been using aluminum oxide 500 only because that's what Shawn at the Rock Shed recommended when we started tumbling. I guess one theory would be that if it rounds off after a few days then maybe its last few days could act as a pre-polish?
