Caught this little guy in the garage today, he's a black ratsnake. They're common around here, this one let me pick him up. Tomorrow we'll take him out of the neighborhood and into a safer place to turn him loose...... Ain't he cute? ;D

We had one of those living under our old house for well over a year... we knew he was there, but we didn't bother him and every now and then he would peep out and say hi:). He got really big, like 5'... and I don't know if he died or just decided to leave, but was gone one day...

I like them, we don't have any mice and I'm pretty sure that it's because we have a big one living under our deck. I heard a rat screaming under the deck the other night, and I know that sound! (pet snakes) ;D

He is cute! Looks black with gold. Looks like he is very curious about the camera.
Is he too young to harm you?

He's way too young to do any kind of harm at all. I've been holding him all evening, he's really docile.

How big do they have to be before they can inflict harm?
I was once running in the hills through long grass in about April when before my very eyes, there was a curled up rattle snake. Yikes! I lengthened my step as quickly as I could, sailed over him, and kept going as fast as I could. I'm more careful in tall grass now. Having lived in Bakersfield, I was familiar with what they looked like, but nothing else.

The only harm they can inflict is a harmless bite with needle-like teeth. It'll bleed, but not much. About 3 feet long and they can draw blood.

Wow, beautiful snake! Largest snake I ever caught was a black rat snake. Tad over seven feet long and surprisingly, quite gentle, unlike our Texas rat Snakes which are really nasty tempered. Your pic is the first younger one I've ever seen and the slight banding is pretty neat......Mel

Even our larger ones up here have the banding, they're really cool. The larger ones are gentle for a couple days, then get aggressive when the shock of being captured wears off.

When my husband and I used to raise snakes (mostly kingsnakes and milksnakes), we had a pair of black ratsnakes. The male was over six feet long, and as thick as a child's wrist. He was extremely docile, but the female was the exact opposite!! She would start striking the glass the minute someone walked into the snake room, and would bite the heck out of you if you tried to pick her up or clean the cage. We sold all the snakes about five years ago... too much work to raise all the mice and rats for food, and just keep up with them in general.

We have 5 snakes now (not including this one). I've had the love for them since I was 5 years old when my dad brought home a hognose snake in a McDonalds bag. He caught it on the side of the road on the way home from work on his '69 Bonneville Triumph. My favorite snake is the Savu Python, "Daisey". She's extremely docile and measures 6'4" (approx). It's really hard to get an accurate measurement on a snake. The closest you can get is by measuring the skin when they shed, but even those stretch and shrink.

Yep, Daisey got bigger, and still gentle as ever!
