OK so, now after rendering the other Lizard too dangerous for wearing; I started another one with Daniels Indonesian Chrysocolla. Slab Day 2 Spend a lot of time on it today, and man, is this material (dark blue) hard. I used up nearly 10 pins and it seems like nothing has happen when looking at the pictures. Thanks for looking, have a great week....... Kurt

What background advice do you need? The blue is gorgeous and it will make an awesome lizard. Looks to me like you have a great start on it but that is a lot of burrs. Do you buy them by the hundreds?
You said that I have a lot of patience but if you are on number eight you have way more patience than me. I would have given up and tossed it a long time ago. lol
As always, very nice work Kurt Jim

Is it possible to do a leaf pattern or bark on the background? A friend in China does a lot of little animals on tree leaves and branches when he carves bamboo.
Just a thought. Jim

If you are worried about breakage... have you thought about temporarily coating it with epoxy to help hold it together (then grinding off the epoxy in the final polish)?
I really like your lizards:). Not so nuts about your frog face tho... for frogs in particular, I think adding material is waaayyy easier than subtracting materials.
I'll show you a carved rock frog I have had for years once I get it uploaded.. the eyes are a lot smaller and the face more rounded.

Ok, here's my frog... background? A big leaf:) Oh, and does anyone know what stone this is? It's DEFINITELY not soapstone, it's some kind of agate, VERY hard (and takes a strong shine as you can see)

Kurt, as the glue is not meant to be permanent, a permanent epoxy would be a waste of money here...
Can you get crazy glue? It's way wateryer than epoxy, and will sink into holes...

It IS a great looking lizard!!! I was just making a suggestion for Kurt's bottom (Leaf).
I was thnking that glue would hold the form from any possible cracking during carving, because it's crysocolla, and while I don't know what Indonesian crysocolla is like, the pieces of regular crysocolla I've tried cabbing all cracked til I epoxied them, which made me realize that epoxy first might be a good preventative measure.

Has the quality suffered recently, or is it because you are much more knowledgeable about rocks and carving? The kewlest thing about Hong Kong is the early morning goldfish/koi market:).

Molds? You mean PLASTIC quartz statues?!
When I visited... I was building a water garden at the time, and obsessed with koi and goldfish. I hand carried 30 of the fancy goldfish through Seattle customs (checked EVERYTHING so I could carry my goldfish)... in 2 gallons of water and 2 battery powered air bubblers (right, 14+ LBS of water). When I got there, they asked what was in the bags, and I said, "goldfish, wanna see em"?
The guy made a face and waved me through (this was before homeland security and 9/11). I thought... geez... I could smuggle DRUGS in a bag of goldfish and they wouldn't even CARE!!! I sort of wanted to show off my insanely fancy goldfish, but he wasn't even interested.
The vast majority of them survived the trip, a few got sick and died immediately. THEN, a blue heron came and 'fished' my pond clean over the course of 2 weeks. I've hated blue herons ever since. Those fancy little fish could not get away. Talk about lesson learned. Today, I think back at what a nut I was... LOL! But even tho I don't keep fish anymore, if I went to HK, that's the FIRST place I'd go... the fish market at dawn:P.
