... Cut it open, let's see what it looks like inside! I will eventually, but I have only a tile saw and rely on the help of a friend for slicing big rocks. I'd like to figure out what it is before I cut into it though.

The banding is very similar to the stromatalite that can be found around here by the truck load. I gave one piece to the museum here that has red in it also. Most of it is a dull tan but a good solid piece will shine up like agate or jasper. The tops on the ones here have ring formations all over them. I will try to remember to get a photo tomorrow when the blazing sun comes out again. Jim

i thought stromatolite too . Jim Yours looks identical . The actinostroma sponge is very similar looking also.

It looks like stromatolite to me, with well-defined layers. Lakers usually don't have vugs, except on the very outside of the nodule. It'll be fun to cut and see the colors on the inside.
