Anybody know what a fair price is for a used 14" Hillquist saw? On the Hillquist website I could not find a 14" saw.

Just my opinions. Hillquist saws cost a little more than some, so used value might be a little higher too. BUT the new price of other brands is $1200 - $1800, so I would not want to pay more than $800, but I expect some would pay $950. Also depends on blade condition.

If it's an older hilquist with the one-way clutch feed system and the funky weird backwards vice I would not spend over $500 for a clean looking one. Shake the vice carriage to see how loose it is, if it's like the 20 incher I had for awhile it will be kind of loose and nothing shy of redesigning it will make it tight. Mine left really bad saw marks and tended to dish blades.

I bought an old 14" Hilquist drop saw that had been redesigned to use a rail and carriage and Hilquist vise. It cuts great! I love mine but got it on a good deal from Craigslist. A 14" Hilquist .060 blade with continuous rim which it had almost unused sells for over $300. I paid $140 for the works. If it is a drop saw be aware that they sling oil but cut great. For the right price you may be glad you got it. Best of luck.

I am not familiar with that brand, but I'd not flinch at spending 400-700 on a 14" depending on features and condition. Sometimes better (sometimes freakish) deals can be found if you are patient and watch Craigslist and are willing to drive a bit to pickup.

Lee, That's the one. I'm wondering what kind of tuning it needs. Anyway, I've been emailing back and forth with him...seems like a nice guy and actually pretty close to where I live. I'm seeing if he is interested in some trades. Justin

IMO tuning is blade dressing and swaging, maybe aligning the blade with the carriage too.

Looks like the lid is leaning against it in the craigs list picture.

That is the lid leaning against the back of the saw. I paid $300 for my Hillquist about ten years ago. The feed works MOST of the time. Because it tends to dish the blade and the vise does not like a very large rock I mostly cut fist size rocks that many would cut in their ten inch saws. The 14" blade will outlast a 10" blade many times. I installed a auto shut off switch. The saw is noisie. I also have a 14" Highland Park and the Hillquist just cuts the smaller rocks. I have got my moneys worth many times with it. Hillquist does have parts for the saws. I needed parts for the feed last year and they sent what I needed "No Charge". The AZ sun has not been kind to the lid and it supports a good deal of duct tape to keep the coolant inside. The lid does not have a hinge on it and has to be lifted off and tends to leak coolant where it is set. Overall I like my Hillquist. Just do not expect it to do heavy duty cutting. Don

Just a quick update: I had some good email exchanges with him but haven't heard anything from him in a couple of days now. I'll give it a couple more days. It turns out that the saw can use a 16" blade too which would be perfect for what I need. Anybody know if a Royal Rock Saw is any good? seattle.craigslist.org/sno/tls/3126180996.htmlI emailed the guy and the saws are actually 16" rather than 14". I might take a look at them if I don't hear back from the other ad.

I like my Royal 18" saw more then the HP I have. It cuts faster and I like the vise more then the HP's. I have had it for over 10 years without a single problem.

Royal saws are good but not for that price, I would pay about the same as the Hilquist. I was at a recent auction where a 18 inch Royal went for under $600 with a usable blade.

we are second owner of a 16" royal, like it really well. I'd agree, the ones listed are pretty high priced, more in line with the Hilquist would be proper.
