Greetings All, Just found another site of a company that exports bulk quantities of lapidary-grade rocks. Check out www.vrstones.com.br/They've got dozens of great pictures of different kinds of rough, including pictures of where the rough is mined. Check out these pictures of actual mining sites for rough www.vrstones.com.br/company.htmIt's enough to make me want to buy at least another ton, maybe 200 kilograms each of green aventurine, blue quartz, and apatite, along with 100 kilos each of amethyst, garnet, citrine, and aquamarine. It's all there just waiting for me....someday. WilliamC

I was struck by the blue quartz in particular; blue is a most unusual color for quartz. Has anybody worked with this stuff, and is it actually quartz? Is it similar to blue lace agate, same hardness, same polish? Exceedingly cool, nice work WilliamC.

i've got some blue quartz moving to the 1000 a.o. today. it is in with rose quartz and green adventurine. it is my favorite of the 3. the look of it varies greatly with some being light blue, some darker and some with vibrant lapis colored stripes. it shaped up great. i was wondering the same thing as you - is it really quartz? it is not transparent like the rose quartz. i'll post some pics later when i move it to the 1000. i know it is great looking and i don't want to mess it up!!

I love the blue quartz and the tourmaline, but, alas, I am afraid my budget won't allow it. So, I will just have to lust over the pics ya'll post!

Did some googling on blue quartz; far as I can see it's not quartz, probably dumortierite, or a mixture. Confusing. Wonder if anybody's looked closely at the stuff.

I've never had any, but I always thought that it was really Quartzite that had been dyed. I know that some of what I have seen advertised in the past was just that. Quartzite structure lends itself very well to dye treatment. Like I said, there may be something that occurs naturally, I've just never seen it.

Hey Y'all. I'm a newbe, blease have patience with my unknowledable hiney. I am in the process of my first tumble, just finished phase one. Along with crystals and quartz i am tumbling raw gemstones (emerald, ruby, topaz, saphire). They are from local mines here in GA, where left overs are sold at "Gem Grubbing" places where you bye a bucket of rocks, get a mesh sieve, a trough of water and go for it, find what you can. I haven't noticed anyone talking about gemstones. are they just too hard to tumble? any info would be appreciated. cookie

This is a quote from mineralminers.com:
"Other minerals may form in the quartzite during the high grade metamorphism, depending on what impurities were present in the original sandstone or sedimentary deposit. If aluminous sediments containing the element boron were present, then the mineral dumortierite can occur disseminated within the quartzite giving it a blue color. This rock is known as blue aventurine quartz. The dumortierite often forms in locally concentrated layers within the quartzite producing an attractive pattern of deep blue colored lines on a lighter blue-gray background."

How do you get Aventurine or rose Quartz to look good. Mine always looks like the inside of a frosted light bulb...or am I just spoiled by Agates and Jaspers

dwight - my rose quartz and adventurine are in 1000 a.o. right now and i'm still deciding on what polish to try. that chart john shared with us says to use tin oxide on adventurine and either cerium or tin oxide on the quartz. i think i'm gonna try the titanium which i've not tried before because i don't have any tin oxide. but i'm open to suggestions until saturday when they will go into polish!
