Headed up to Ferry this weekend to get some stuff for the rock box. It's an amazing little village that spans both sides of the Nenana river. The only way to get to the East half of the village is a 45 inch wide train man's walk on the Alaska Railroad bridge. Walking is fine, but getting the wheeler across is a bit... interesting. The reason for coming out here is banded hematite, jasper with hematite, moss agate, chalcedony, blood stone, carnelian agate, and some other fun stuff.
Getting there
Down town Ferry
Beer Boulevard
Headed to Moose creek, source of Moss agate and chalcedony.
When we got out to the creek, it became apparent I forgot to put bug spray in my kit. Super lame. So we high tailed it out of there before being carried off by mosquitos. Turns out that the hour we spent getting there was enough to put Audrey to sleep.
Driving to Nenana to drop off a case of wood cutting additive for a friend in Ruby.
Breakfast of champions. In gold pan.
Heading out to Eva creek by myself. 13 miles on an atv is too much for the baby. This gravel super highway is the result of the Eva creek wind farm project. It sucks, because the best jasper/hematite occured in the road bed. Now covered by 3 feet of gravel.
On the plus side, I can go 35 mph the whole way to the top of the pass.
At the top there is the remains of a plane crash from 2004.
The memorial
Heading down to Eva Creek
The Liberty Bell gold dredge operation
Back on top of the mountain, this is some sort of iron glob.
Moose creek valley
Found a nice rock! Unfortunately I didn't bring any explosive.
Back at Moose creek, Audrey did some rock hounding.
Still haven't unloaded the haul. Will post pics of that stuff later today.
