Kev - Price sounds great! I whipped out my trusty calipers and set them to metric just to get an idea how much the pan ought to shake. Anything more than 3mm looks like it might end up slinging the rocks around too much... I think. So let's go with a 3mm one and i'll see what happens, ok? Thanks a TON! Rick

Hi! I was thinking of trying to make a sphere preform indexing jig shown here: www.sphereproducts.com/slabgrabber-sphereindexing.htmWould you be able to cut the pieces for the frame and then weld it together? The two end pieces would need holes for the vise screw and the indexing pin and bearing bolt. Justin

justin...i can make that easily...we need dimensions...whats behind that felt for holding the stone...screw size....i can figure out a lot....but any other info from you or others would be helpful.
i have to watch out for patent issues also...im sure i can actually improve something like that...make changes so patents dont come into play....my welders brother is a patent attorney....so me gets free advice once in awhile ;D....that chit is expensive.
see what you can dig up....or if anyone wants to weigh in...feel free to do so ;D...kev.

Kev, The indexer reminds me of a c-clamp except we need 2 thrust bearings, some way of indexing the rotation angle, and the indexing pin acts as a hard stop so it doesn't rotate. I'm pretty sure the design can be improved or changed enough to avoid patent licensing. The dimensions should be scalable to fit different size saw vises. I need something to fit in my 10" Lortone saw vise and I'll get some dimensions for you. I would guess the screw size is 3/8" or 1/2". I'm not sure what is under the felt of that particular design but I'm thinking that the thrust bearing housing would have a rubber or wood/hardboard face for gripping the stone. Thanks for taking a look. Justin

If that indexer can be figured out, I'd be interested in one too.
It would be nice if the indexing pins were spring loaded, so you could just pull the pins back and rotate to the next hole.

It might be possible to make the indexer frame with telescoping square tubes so that you can adjust it for different sized saws. My saw vise also clamps up and down (rather than front to back if this makes sense) so I will probably need a screw to assist in clamping and holding the rock. This can be taken out if someone has a different style vise. I will work on a quick sketch for you. Thanks!

hey yaw...a telescoping frame is totally doable....stiff legs could be added for top clamping vises to clamp on in a way that doesnt enter fear with traditional side clamping vises....spring loaded pin not a problem.
the 12 hole indexer could be increased to 14 or 16 holes for more so called facets....the diameter of the indexing wheels would have to increase some...what yaw think.
i still need ideas of what shape may be under that felt for holding the stone....possibly a hole in the center for clamping on points.
i have the bearing thing figured out...still need a few more ideas.
how far from the bottom to the center of the indexing wheel?
square tubing 1"....1 1/4"?
diameter of indexing wheel?
length from front to back?... looking at the link...pic right hand corner.
more later kev.

Hey Kev, Showed it to the gang, they all love it. So........ What if I have you make me another one that converts a 1/2 inch shaft up to a 5/8th inch shaft? 2 set screws to hold it on to the 1/2 inch motor shaft, and a flat on the 5/8 dia where another set screw will fasten on a polishing wheel? Total length about 2 inches give or take, and send you $40 total for both?
Thanks! Phil
