Hello Fellow Rockers, I need some quick advice. I think this may go fast due to the price. We have a older but unused Highland Park Model E-10 Gem Stone Cutting tool and a 2 tumbler Scott Murry polisher drum set with motor. seattle.craigslist.org/sno/tls/3117471466.htmlI currently have a Lortone Arbor with two wheels and side disk and an old Lortone 2x 12 pound barrel. I don't know much about Highland Park but I need a saw. I will probably keep the Lortone arbor for use with finer grit polishing and sell the Lortone. Or if Highland Park is not as good as Lortone brand then sell the Highland Park Tumbler. They are asking $350 which seems like a great deal with all the un used blades and grinding disk. What are your thoughts/opinions? Matt

Highland Park is top notch equipment. I'd jump on it at that price.

Highland Park made the best lapidary equipment available at the time. There is no comparison between Lortone and HP. The old joke was HP went bankrupt because their equipment was so well built they never saw their customers again. Maybe an exaggeration but Lortone is known for using the lightest gauge sheet metals possible, lower priced bearings, and other components in order to be the lowest priced on the market. Lortone makes equipment that works. HP was built strong and durable. In most cases the HP equipment easily would outlast the 60's and 70's customers that bought them new. A lot of people are buying up the old HP equipment and restoring them and upgrading wheels to diamond. If you had the HP saw/two wheel combo and your Lortone 2 station with expando drums you would have a nice set up. The HP saw alone is worth $350.

No reason that HP couldn't be upgraded to 3 wheels. Use your Lortone arbor for grinding, and the HP for sanding and polishing.

As all have said, that is a good deal. I'd love to find a tumbling rig like that near me.

I called and set up to meet him this evening. Thank you guys for your input. I like how my Lortone tumbler hold 2 12#s and 2 8 or 6#s but he's a noisy bastard. I wonder if i can use the lortone barrels on the highland? From the looks of the metal barrels the rubber may be quieter.

Now you all have me excited about the HP
Right now I have a green grind wheel, expanding belt and side disk. It looks like the HP has two grinding disks areas but no motor. Can someone suggest a motor brand/model and what HP motor to buy A 1/4 or 1/3 HP (1725 rpm)?

I use any 1750 1/3 horse I can find. I know other people on here use certain brands but I have not had any issues with my various brands of motors. I seem to have a bunch of GEs. A great place to get a super cheap one is your local scrap metal shop...My scrap shop sells them to me for $10. Scott

Those metal barrels will have thick rubber liners inside, not as noisy as they look. Pretty sure the main shafts are too far apart to put a lortone 12 on there. I would not use a 1/4 hp for the combo Unit I would go with the 1/3 hp 1725 rpm one.

I saw that combo advertised at $400. You might think of upgrading to diamond wheels sometime but still definitely a good deal.

Thanks everyone for your help, I did end up picking up both units for the $350 and very excited to get it all running together and wheels arranged so I can get the most out of grinding and polishing. I have to admit I am very overwhelmed about getting everything all tuned up. Currently my Lortone is vibrating pretty bad and I need to make some adjustments on it. The HP definitely has room for one more wheel but I can't seem to locate a manual to figure out how to retrofit another wheel. But with the wheels the way they are I should be able to go from hard to polish. The blade and grinder and pad are brand new and the unit has never been ran. The tumbler looks like it was ran maybe twice. There is a 12/15# barrel and a 2nd barrel with two rubber inserts inside to create 2 6# barrels in one. When I tested it dry I was amazed by how quiet it ran. Almost silent. That will change when its wet and full though lol. I'm still looking for a motor for the HP but that will have to wait another pay check I am waiting on Rockshed for grit delivery (thanks everyone for your post suggestions on Rockshed). before I can repeat step one on some agate I have going. When I get everything up and running I will get some pics out. I can't wait to get pics out of some polished stone and cuts soon too. Cheers

There should be spacers between your wheels. You can reconfigure the unit by making or buying different lengths of spacers.

Right, redo the spacer between existing wheels as needed and drill a hole over the new wheel and install a compression needle valve.
