Nope.
These were first used starting back in the late 1800's. I was using them up until a few years ago.
When someone finally ID's them, I'll post pics showing what they're used for.

Looking at the untouched heads, with that wide groove along, it's clear they were not hammered, otherwise there would be deformations on there ... at least not hammered with a metalic hammer.
Could there be something used in rivetting, to allign the holes in the metal pieces which are about to be assembled?

Nope & Nope.
Adrian, you must remember that when these were made, machining wasn't very accurate. Most of the scratches were from the broaching process used to make them. But yes, in their use they are slid.
