I have to keep an eye on my little dogs when she goes out to do her buisness because there were two great horned owls in the tree last night it was too dark to take pics though. now she is mad that she can't go lay in the sun and chase the birds, I am worried the big birds will eat her. my niece had seen one take one of her cats and I am not risking it she is my baby Jessie

Cute pup! Mine is all grown up now so I'm not quiet as paranoid about big birds. Could still happen though and I never let him out at night by himself. Curt

Posted pics of a great horned a few months back. Wouldn't let Jake out after dark, unless I was near him with the shotgun. That owl watched every move Jake made.

Yup, Great Horned Owls regularly prey on skunks and while tiny dogs or cats are not their regular fodder, they are opportunistic and might take a few. I do know of one guy who had a pet GBH and came home one day to find it sitting on it's perch eating the neighbors tiny dog but it was a real tiny dog. Real embarrassing explaining that one to the neighbor I expect. We had a couple at the raptor center where I worked and they were neat but had to be handled with respect, especially if they has a nest site in the flight. They defend their nest territory with extreme prejudice....Mel

Yeah, I know somebody in an LA suburb who watched while their (not that) small white dog got carried away by an owl. Scary! Love Schnauzers, she is adorable Tammy!

Around here it's Bald Eagles and Red Tailed Hawks that eat the rabbits and pets. My sister was watching rabbits in her back yard when a hawk came down and grabbed one without stopping. We have herons, too; watched one fishing yesterday.

I have eagles, redtails, and falcons that patrol my yard as I feed the birds.
The falcon shoots through the trees like they are not there and the redtail cannonballs the doves that come to feed right out of the air

I don't know what I would do if she got taken, she is so precious to me. at jakesrocks I had read that when you posted it made me think of when I first got Jessie there was an owl in the tree really had to watch her cause she was a pocket pet then. I have heard of birds taking dogs right off the leash not sure if it was a tall tale.

In Atlanta, a few years ago, along the Chattahoochee River trail, a minature wiener dog was taken by a hawk while on a lesh. The hawk dropped the dog and was safe. So on occasions I reckon hawks or owls might take pets too just because of convience.

We had one very smart owl that was snowy white and very big that used to swoop down out of the trees to fly along side of us when we were coming home late at nite from work. We lived at Lake Henshaw Ca. at that time and commuted to work in Escondido on our bike
That owl was flying along side of us in hopes we would scare a critter up for it to grab!

Don't know what kind of owl it was, but about a year ago, one them swooped into my neighbor's yard one night and snatched up their pet "yard chicken"! It was witnessed by the nieghbors next to them. Lots of hawks during the daytime, too. I'd definitely worry if I had an outdoor cat, or small dog. Jean
