Last weekend while at Richardson's we found a few slabs in the pile my wife wanted. Here are three I have gotten sanded this week. And yes I am sanding completely by hand. Start wet sanding with 220 till no saw marks move on to 500 then 1000 it takes a long time per slab but they come out real nice. rp I have no idea where they are from but they are pretty Slab 1: Slab 2: Slab 3:

Wow! Very nice! Those are great looking slabs. That first one has some great patterning and colors! So, how long does it take you to do the polishing by hand?

I've got three diamond scrub pads that I use for the worst of the scratches; they end at 350grit and sure take a lot of the work out of it. Lloyd

Holly Molly, you are going to have upper body and hand strength enough to choke down an ox. Really nice slabs. Jim

It takes a few hours each from rough slab to pollished slab. I will have to look for the scrub pads

richardson's sander is specialized.ideal rough is half thunderegg. Other half-nodule or faced rough is OK too. must be able to keep a good grip. rough can fly across room. you also need serious dust control system.
orbital palm sander is <$30, and approximates vibrating lap. may be better for slabs.

Never occurred to me to try the orbital palm sander that's sitting on my shelf next to the tumblers. Duh. I'll have to take a look at it and figure out if I can use that as well. Thanks for the idea.
