Well, .... it isn't really rock related but this is one of the things i have been doing during the evening while i am out searching for gold. After working a solid 12-14 hours i like to relax for an hour or two and let mind drift while i knit a little bit. I am prospecting and camping in a remote area with no power, phone, or radio signals so i needed another hobby to help me wind down before bed. My mother taught mw to knit over 25 years ago and it all came back to me pretty quickly and i am now crafting things i would have thought were beyond my skill back then. So far this season i have knitted a couple scarfs, toques, gloves, and have just finished my most ambitios knitting project to date. It is a wool pullover sweater with a simple cable pattern. I couldn't find a pattern like i wanted so i made up my own by taking ideas and measurements from a few different ones that were close to what i wanted. Enough typing, ..... on to the pics. I know it isn't rock related but it is something i have been doing while i have been searching for the heavy yellow rock, .... gold. I have enjoyed this different type of craft but i am looking forward tot he winter again when i can get back to rock carving and polishing.

Dang, man!!!!! You did a really good job!!!! Especially since you put it together from different patterns! I am sure it's going to come in handy come winter time, too! Kudos to your mom for teaching you, as well. Wayyyyyyyyy too many youngsters (male & female) & for that matter, not so young, nowadays don't know s**t about some of the simplest things of living! Things like cooking, cleaning, sewing a simple button on or fixing a little hole in a shirt or pair of pants! Heck, why even bother to learn how to do that when you pay good money (money you could spend on rocks) for a pair of pants with holes already in them!!!!!! Schools don't even teach them anymore & parents certainly are teaching them because some of them don't even know how!! Sorry got off on a tangent! It's a pet peeve of mine!!!!! REALLY NICE SWEATER!

That is an awesome sweater and the fit is perfect. My mother taught me how to crochet but I lost the skill a long time ago. Knitting is almost a lost art here in the USA but still going strong in other parts of the world. Great to see someone carry on the skill especially a man. Most people look at it as a woman's trade or skill but a lot of men are taking it up because it is so relaxing and you can do it anywhere. Jim

excellent work! my grandmother used to knit voraciously, sweaters, afghans, socks, mittens. all the good stuff. she taught me, but i never got very good at it. my mother crocheted. i taught myself hot to chrochet, but agin, never really did much with it. so, i stand in awe of your skill, Sampson!

Great job! Looks great on you, too. Knitting is a good counter-balance to rock hunting out in the woods.

Wow! Impressive work! My mom in law knitted me a sweater once that turned out big enough to use as a sleeping bag. Your's actually fits well *L*. And I'll bet up where you live it's useful too. So dang hot here in Texas now that one of Adrian's banana hammocks would be too much clothes.....Mel

Thanks for all the great comments. I was away prospecing the last two weeks since i posted this and it is great to see so many nice comments. I have worn it a few times now and love the way it keeps me warm without overheating me.
Knitting is definitely a dying art around here too. There are a few older ladies who do it a lot as well as a very few younger girls who do it but so far i have only ran into one other man who was an avid knitter. People do find it strange to see me knitting in public places, ..... especially since i am a mid 30's long haired bushman, .... but it does start up some interesting conversations.
I am now making a cardigan version with a much more detailed cable pattern out of some of the same yarn but am already looking forward to my next knitting project that i have the wool for. It is going to be another pullover but this time in a very detailed and complicated Aran pattern like a classic Irish fishermans sweater. It is very time consuming but i would rather do anything with my hands than sit around watching the tv like so many people tend to do. It has even given me some ideas for a stone carving once i get some more continous free time this winter again

Something with a Celtic chain I imagine! Amazing how one thing melds into another when working with your hand! Enjoy!!!

Ahhhh--my second favorite hobby! What a perfect way to spend evenings. Beautifully executed cables, and lots of patience there--very nice job.
