Just been a novice rock hounder my whole life... dragging box after box of "perdy" rocks around the country.
I grew up in Michigan, left, and moved back here after 12 years.
For the last 2 summers, I've been collecting bucket after bucket of agates... When I finally got around to tumbling them, I was googling for info and ran across this forum. I've been reading posts for 2 days straight!
I'm excited to be here!!!

Good to see another yooper on the board! I'm originally from Wisconsin, but all my family is in Escanaba.

Hey YooperGal, I'm in Alpena, but I have two Yooper sisters. One is in Marquette and the other is in Lake Linden. I just got back from a week visiting them. The U.P. is beautiful.

Hi Jugglerguy - I hope you found some good agates while your were here!
I've found most of mine in Marquette... though I've been to Grand Marais and The Keewana, my best agates are still close to home!

Welcome from lower Michigan (Grand Rapids)!! Still trying to catch a break so I can get up there and hopefully find some Lake Superior agate. I love that stuff, but can't get myself to buy it when I live in the same state, lol.

No Kidding!
I have a couple of "secret" spots - that are right out in the open - no one thinks to look at these spots... If anyone heads up here - shoot me a message and I'll be happy to tell you were there are!

Welcome! And for the rest of us, where did the term 'yooper' come about?

U.P. = Yooper just a play on the intials
What Da Heck Is A Yooper?
The people that live in the Upper Peninsula or the U.P. are called "Yoopers" and are proud of it. The people that live under the bridge are called "trolls." The song "I'm a Troll Man" was written about them. Lots of trolls from down below dream about moving to da U.P., but there's no work here. So we let them come up to relax, enjoy and spend their cash, but they gotta go home afterwards.

Ja, ve velcome ya. lol Yooper sounds like a friend of mine from Minnesota that would talk the (I think Irish English) once in a while. Any questions just ask away. Someone on here will almost always have an answer or let you know where to find it. Jim

I've looked for agates up there several times this summer, but no luck yet. This last trip, we were in copper mine dumps more than on beaches. We were looking for datolites. My son my have found a couple, but we haven't had them cut open yet. We went to a few beaches too, but couldn't find agates. I found what might be a Thomsonite, but is more likely prehnite, judging by what I saw at the rock museum at Michigan Tech. I'll contact you before my next trip to Marquette!

Welcome!!! Great to have another Yooper! I spend as much time in the U.P. as I possibly can.
We need a good hard winter so the pack ice will roll in and expose some lakers for us! It's been pretty tough picken up there lately.

Show of hands, How many of yous yoopers have a drinkin', I mean huntin' shack out der in da woods? Every one I ever knew did.
Wampidy, if yer talkin' Minnesotan, that'd be Norvegian American, not Irish. Yoopers might talk Cornish American though. Those folks came to the UP to mine, and eat pasties.
Only been there a couple times, but I like the place. Hell of a place to find awesome rock too.

I live two hours south of the bridge and huntin' is pretty big here too. All the schools in this area are closed for opening day of deer season.
