Hi all! I introduced myself, jeesh it's been a couple years ago now. My dd got interested in rocks and we got a lot of info and help from here. We also got to meet montanamadman, which was awesome! He was incredibly helpful. Then, life got in the way. We had to build my mom a place and then we had a baby. Well, now the house is built and baby is under control, sort of. DD is still very into rocks so we're going to try this again. On a slightly different note, my grandfather used to be a bit of a rockhound. He had a nice little display cabinet he built that he used to display and store a lot of his smaller stuff. He used to have everything labeled with the name and location found. When he died, my aunt took it. She decided she didn't want it anymore so gave it to us. The downside is, she didn't take care to keep labels when she packed it up. So, we are going to go through it and try and identify all the stuff again. I'm sure it will take us a LONG time, but it will be a fun project. We have no experience in rock id yet. I have the Audobon Field Guide to North American Rocks and Minerals. Will that and the internet get us started with identifying stuff or are there better resources out there that we should get? Thanks!!!!!!

Welcome back! Yes post here and you will get them labelled. I've never had much luck with any of the field guides for identifying specific agate areas.

If you like looking at rock, I've figured out some of what I had by looking through ebay...although that can be dangerous, because 'oops, I just bid' Welcome back!

I'm going to guess; from it being your grandfathers collection, that there are going to be a lot of minerals in the collection and will give you "Mindat" to help if we can't. Not saying there is going to be any reason to use it of course. :<)

Welcome back thermopkt. Any friend of Bob, (montanamadman) is a friend of mine. As already mentioned, Mindat www.mindat.org/ is a good resource. I have several others bookmarked, and will post more helpful links later. Post lots of pics. There are lots of folks on here who will help with ID. Don
