Wondering if anyone has used epoxy on ethiopian opal .. My concerns are -could it get sucked into the opal because it is hydrophane which it is and crack or discolor the opal .. this situation could greatly benefit from just a lil bit of epoxy .. I was actually thinking the quicker the better ..maybe 5 minute epoxy ..

Yep. I use epoxy on opals:). There are so many types of epoxy tho, and unfortunately, I think price dictates quality here. You want UV, no shelf life, and a slow drying 2 part blend ideally. Those tend to be the highest quality. You should use hxtal ideally, but if you cannot get it, I have been told that windshield repair epoxy is roughly the same thing (the kind that takes out bullet holes/starbursts in your windshield). Here's one with opal in glass (I just poked a hole in a pendant while making it, filled it with epoxy and stuck a small welo in it - I prefer my opals with 'skin' so no one confuses them as part of the glass): Actually, I only made a few of these and sold them all at the last show I did. Forgot all about that, need to make some more:).

by using a vacuum you can get the epoxy to penetrate if it is thin enough to fill fractures but getting it into the "pores" is not a problem methinks. most epoxy are too thick, and hydrophane I don't think means it will neccessarily pull in other materials.
