During a short trip up the central coast of California, I found some beach glass in the surf. Neat stuff. So I thought, I have a tumbler (a few), I'll make my own.
I broke up some beer bottles (empty, I made sure). Packed them in the tumbler with some grit and small pebbles and gave it a spin.
When I opened the tub it was like magic. The glass was GONE!
Note to self. Only tumble glass for a couple of days.

That is so funny (sorry!) I will have to remember that, as I love beach glass....used to collect it as a kid. My parents retired close to the beach and my mom used to fill a big glass jar/vase with beach glass and then wire it as a lamp. Brings back memories. Sue

What grit did you use? I think using beach sand would have been appropriate, and you could do it for a longer time. Never done it before myself, just thinking out loud. Jean

Obvious solution - more beer, i.e. more beer bottles, fewer or no pebbles.

I generally tumble my glass overnight to two days, depending on the thickness. Any more than that and the glass seems tp become kinda brittle, unless its really thick. I prefer to use construction sand, as play sand breaks down quickly.

My last batch came out great. I found some blue beer bottles (spinning now) and some pickle jars. Now I'm searching for other color glass.

There's a sweet wine called Moscato d'Asti that Costco sells. It comes in a pretty blue bottle! Jean

Too bad glass is not a paying proposition. I could pick up tons of bud rock on the BLM land here. In some areas I have given up because I can not carry it all. Anyone needing a bunch of bud rock I am giving it away. It will only take me an hour or so to get you a box full. Jim

Harvey's Bristol Cream Sherry also comes in a lovely blue bottle: add some borax and burp your barrels often... KD

I don't drink any of those. Well, the Skyy vodka once in a blue moon but the bottle is plastic, at least the ones I get from Delta airlines are. Bud Light comes in a blue bottle? Really? Not around here. I put out a request for blue bottles for a project over a year ago on our local free cycle and only got offered two tiny perfume bottles so I had to abandon the project! Maybe it's a regional difference. Hmm. I'm not buying any Bud Light or sweet wine any time but the next time I go to the grocery I will now have to check the bottles myself just to satisfy myself that I'm not going nuts!

I think the faux beach glass crowd tumble in 60/90 just long enough to round the glass and leave a scratchy frosted look. They want it to look like beach tumbled glass not polished obsidian.

Off to grocery store . . . it's hot here today . . . that's a nice blue too. Surprising, it must be expensive to produce.
