I dont know if this is an age old problem that is older than rocks. But I have noticed a trend whilst trying to acquire a new area to hunt. Rockhounds seem to be notorious for having a tendency of talking with out saying any thing. After having had a long drawn out interrogation. I end up with directions at best narrowed down to about 200 sq miles. I admire these skills and hope to be this good some day. but it is common knowledge that if you get me drunk I get all blabby. So when asked for directions to a favorite honey hole of yours .... what do you do?

I've found that most people are happy to share with you if you express an honest interest in the hobby. I've met some folks on another forum who have mothered me along as I try to learn this fascinating hobby. Without them, I'd still be totally lost. The best thing is that I have made some friends who I not only trust but actually enjoy being with.

If you're asking for directions to their favorite honey hole, you'll probably get sent in the opposite directions. But if asking directions to a well known site, (usually picked clean), you'll usually get great directions.

*L* Before the days of E-bay, rockhounds used to be much more forthcoming with good directions. Now there are too many commercial collectors all too willing to use your directions to your favorite honeyhole to strip it clean and sell it on E-bay. That being said, I'll usually try to help folks out but my prospecting technique leaves a lot to be desired. It basically involves going to a general area and wandering around half lost till I find something cool, filling my pack, and then trying to find my way back to my car *L*. And as I get older, the finding my way back part seem to be getting harder.....Mel

I could keep half of the country busy picking up rock but I am only going to take a few friends to my best spot. I hiked a lot of miles to find that spot so someone just driving by is not going to get that information. I will send them or take them to some damn nice pickings though. I will never be able to pick it all up even if I live for another hundred years. If they wander around long enough and find my spot more power to them. I do not own it until it is in my hand. Jim

I've always had the ability to get along with someone that I want directions or questions from.......Like here,I seen a saw for sale in the paper and ended up BS'ing with the guy and went to his house and got five, five gallon pails full of rocks.... Just because I listened to his tales and stories, plus some great rockhounding areas to hunt....... I'm sure there are zipped lipped people out there, but haven't met any yet!

I know one Mike. He found a new source for Biggs jasper. It's within a very short walk from the highway, and hidden from view by a little ridge. That's as much as he would tell me. Posted a pic of a piece on Helen's thread.

I've found most folks to be very forthcoming and I've tried to repay in kind with accurate directions. Of course, most of what I use are the Strong and Mitchell books, Mindat (as Geoff mentions) and High Desert Insider, so it's not like I've found anything "new".

It depends. if it's a site that I've explored pretty well and and feel is fairly common knowledge in local hounding circles, and can handle additional hounding pressure, I'll give you good directions to it. If it's a place that I just discovered and haven't really gotten a feel for yet, or want to keep to myself for a while, I'll send you to the county line. LOL
last time I took someone out to one of my 'secret' spots, suddenly everyone was asking me for directions to it at the next club meeting. Someone blabbed. I didn't feel much like sharing after that. Next time I find another "honey hole" it's going to be my little secret for a good long while before I take anyone else out there.
unless you feed me lost of fish and beer. then I might be persuaded.

Here in BLM/Sierra Club country we have another problem. The zillions of old mine roads give access to hounding areas. If the roads are not used they close the roads. Sometimes it is better to share info to keep areas open. Some of my favorite areas are only open because the off roaders lobby loud enough to keep them open.
