Sorry about the blurry picture. All the same rock but the one is heat treated. Mike

Thats pretty cool looking. What method did you use to heat? I've read people heating up tigers eye to turn it red but don't know how they do it.

This was my second attempt at heat treating. Several years ago, I took several rocks that I found along the Columbia River while Kayaking. I sliced a few and put them in an old crock pot buried with a bunch of sand. Put everything in my kitchen oven and started bringing the heat up 100degrees at a time. As soon as the oven had reached temperature…I’d increase another 100 degrees. After I maxed out at 550 degrees I left it there for 1 hour. Turned the oven off and waited until they had cooled off.

The rock in the picture is just some quartz of sorts. A lot of this stuff is found along the columbia and rivers that dump into the columbia. A river rock.

Some of the other rocks I tried did not come out so good. Either real dark, or it removed the color from a sharp bright to a dull dark. This was the only one that I kept, the others I tossed.

I tried this with a small piece of amethist and it did nothing. I was told that I needed to keep it in for a longer time, I also was told that I needed higher tempature for amethist. Not sure i just wanted to see what would happen.

I would love to know what that rock is. I took the photo and shrunk it down so it was not so fuzzy and still could not tell. I have quartz and agate that look about the same. If you find out please let us know because I would like to try it. The change is awesome. Jim

I've asked Geologists about the rocks I get along the columbia river...they just say it is a form of quartz.
