Hello! I have been slowly finding an interest in rocks over the last few years. Herpetology is my primary hobby, and while I am hiking, I sometimes find some cool things. A few years back, I took a piece of yellow something, and started rubbing it on sand paper just seeing how flat I could make some sides. While working on that, I found a brown rock that had a hint of blue showing through, so I started sanding that. Turns out the inside was a mix of blue and white. Since then my wife and I have been picking up rocks while at the beach, and thinking "What would this look like polished?" So we broke down and bought a tumbler. We haven't polished much yet, just put some basic stuff through a rough tumble to see what it might look like. In the mean time, I found a larger brown rock like the one I had sanded, and also saw blue in it. This time, I bought a cheap $12 dry cut diamond wheel and put it on my miter saw. The rock has a nice blue and white inside. It's not banded like an agate. more like bluish gray circles with a white between kinda? Well, cutting was interesting for me, and I was amazed how different some rocks looked on the inside, so I started chopping things open a couple weeks ago. I found some cheap diamond lap discs on ebay, and popped them on my disc sander too. Just a few weeks in, I am going nuts. I brought home many rocks from my in-laws farm where they have a pile of rocks that had been pulled out of their fields for the last 50 years. Today though, I found the coolest thing yet, and decided I should join here, introduce myself, and ask everyone... what the heck is this? dl.dropbox.com/u/39913152/2012-08-10_20-30-57_531.jpgdl.dropbox.com/u/39913152/2012-08-10_20-30-51_437.jpgdl.dropbox.com/u/39913152/scan1.jpgdl.dropbox.com/u/39913152/scan2.jpg--Don (My family knows me as Donnie, but I noticed another member went by that too )

Welcome the the RTH from California. I think we all have an innate desire to see what is inside that rock. Frequently we are stunned by the beauty.

Welcome. You really started off with some awesome rock. My guess would be jasper/agate or moss agate of some kind. It is a beauty and someone from that area may know that stone. Depends on whether or not anyone else has found some of it and given it a name. New stuff pops up all the time and if it does not have a name you can call it whatever you like. lol Jim

Jim, it was found in a sand pit along the Cedar River. It could be from anywhere in the river drainage. I really like how it looks, and I am hesitant to work more with it.

It is so great seeing pictures of what you all find. I only to seem to find my finds on Ebay LOL Than again you can't expect to win the lottery if you don't buy a ticket. I really should start lookin even though I am in NJ. Though I live a block off the ocean I bet there are some beach rocks. Do you think? Oh welcome to the forum great finds you have there Don Stu

Welcome to the forum. Let me be a spoiled sport and lecture you about grinding/sanding/cutting rocks dry. Most rocks we work with (all the quartz family like agates, jaspers, etc.) are silica based. Breathing the dust while working them dry deposits microscopic silica into your lung tissues. This will lead to silicosis over time that can kill you. Similar affect as the coal miner's black lung disease that builds up until you can't breath. You can help by using adequate ventilation and a respirator mask (not a .99 dust mask). Or use lapidary intended equipment that uses water to eliminate dust. Your rocks are real pretty but not worth dying for.
