I am posting this everywhere so maybe everyone can learn this method of using this forum.
The "New topics" button is a very bad way to stay in touch with this forum. You miss a lot of rock related posts because they drop through that page very fast.
Go to the home page and pick your favorite subject. After you read all the new stuff there click "mark as read" then the next time you visit that page the new stuff will be orange instead of blue. Then you can go back to the home page and click on your next topic of interest. This way you do not miss anything.
I am going back to this method because I recently found out that I was missing things that I do not want to miss.
If someone gets political on a rock post then we all need to jump on their ass about it. Mistakes will be made especially by the newer people but this is a great place to be so stick around and enjoy only the hobby side of this forum. It is very easy. Jim

Good info Jim. There is only one section on this forum that specifically allows political discussion. We should all learn to keep it in that section.
I've been a member for a while now, and until it was brought to my attention I didn't even know that the 50 most recent feature even existed. I still don't use it
For those who are overly sensitive to political subjects, I'd suggest that you simply skip over that section. What you don't read won't offend you.
For the rest of us, remember which section of this forum was set aside for political and other touchy subjects, and keep them there. Don

Never use it myself! I always go and peek into the areas that hold my interest to see what is new or ongoing

Yup ! I start at the top of the page and work my way down. Any topics of particular interest to me, I bookmark. New topics I'll look at. If they're interesting I'll bookmark also.
I'm just as guilty as many others of posting my political views, but only in the appropriate section and threads. Those don't get bookmarked. They only rate a distant second to my interest in rocks.
In the over 2 years that I've been a member, at the most I've looked at the 50 most recent listing 3 times. I'd suggest others do the same. You know what your likes and dislikes are. Act on them appropriately and you won't be offended.

I will have to try that Jim as i have always used the new topics method. I never had a problem missing anything because I am signed in all the time. Though for me it is easier to just do new topics. In any respect I think it would be a lot better if they just don't put new posts to Life in the Universe in "New Topics" Anyone who wants to debate politics on a rock forum could just go there in the first place and then it would not be in everyones face.

POST REMOVED AT JIM'S REQUEST.
I will not use the "new topics" button.
I did not realize that this was an "educational post" and I do not think that the content of my post was "political."
Mea culpa Jean

That's a great point, Jim. I do that periodically and sort of jump back and forth through the forums. Otherwise, I do miss things! And yes, I stay out of the politics-side as well, out of respect for others opinions but mostly because I'm here to learn and share the hobby. I've so appreciated how willing people are to help with advice, ideas, suggestions, etc. And they're all very patient with me! LOL!

I put up this post for one reason and the second thing that I get is politics by people that do not want to see politics. You are being controversial on a learning post. Please take your politics else where and delete your reply. I do not want to see it.
Thanks to the others for their nice comments. Jim

In seven years, I don’t think I ever clicked on new topics. So I just did to see what’s causing this ruckus.
IT IS NOT NEW TOPICS OR NEWEST THREADS. I just posted an actual NEW topic less than an hour ago and it’s barely on page one of new topics right now. Currently at #30. ;D
All it is is* a condensed list – NO TEXT - of threads most recently posted to. Thirty threads. How many of those thirty spots get occupied when Life, the Universe is hoppin?
Five or six, maybe? And this is what you got to bitch about? No duplicates. If me or Jake or Helen post back and forth fifty times about the price of eggs in Mongolia, it shows up ONCE on new topics. As a title only, and NO TEXT.
* H/T – Bill Clinton

fiver - I was trying to give the complainers about the politics a way to avoid them without changing what has been here for many years. You are basically pointing out another option that I attempted in the past and got nowhere so I tried this. You have pretty much made my point by pointing out that you have been here for seven years and have not used the button. Jim

There used to be a 10 most recent posts link. I used it alot years ago. Unfortunately, you got the posts - not just the topic. I had to stop using it because I never look into the off-topic section. People I otherwise appreciate sat the most inflammatory things.
I just read the saws/slabs section now. I occasionally look in the buy/sell or the general sections. I figure I miss a lot in cabs or creations or roc tumbling. Once in a blue moon I look through those too.
Maybe "new topics" would be easier to manage. But, I'll just stick to the sections I actually care about.

Helen’s typing like a bandit tonight. Wonder what * new topics* looks like? Two titles out of thirty of the political persuasion. Oh, the horror.

Actually, how it works is it gives the topic that was MOST recently posted to by time:).
What that means is, if I post to the topic, and you immediately posted to the topic, and NO ONE ELSE posted ANYWHERE on the forum, then the topic will show up 2x, once for me, once for you.
But if anyone posted at the same time, the time precedence will take over.
I read fast. So I go to the full forum first, to see how many new posts based on the time of the post since I last look, and click on each forum. THEN I go click on the new topics in case I missed any. If you don't like the off-topics, reading everything via forum is actually faster, because you don't need to click on topics you don't care about, even if they have new notes.
You quit blaming it all on me, Parfive! You did it too!!!!! PFFFFT!
