Can someone chime in and let me know if I can cut Chrysocolla with oil or is that a water only rock? Got a cool little piece as a surprise from Tntmom that's begging to be slabbed and cabbed.
Thanks Chuck

In my humble opinion, the chrys from here in AZ is to porus to use oil. I use nothing but water on chrys and shattikite.

i have had some copper oxides soak up oil. I had to heat to get it all out. on some varasite, it changed the color of the matrix.
you might soak it in water for a few days 1st, and then clean well right after cutting. I let one piece sit in the saw exposed to oil for days, and I never got it all out.

thanks! I might try the trick with soaking in water first, that sounds like it might work. Its a small chunk so I should be able to get a few slabs off in about a half hour then I will soak and scrub with dawn dishsoap right away.

Hello,
There is another method of removing oil from slabs that I recently heard about from an old rockhound. He said that he cleans the slabs as you normally do, but, then he puts his slabs in an old metal pan, covers them with water and bakes them in the oven overnight at very low temperature. He said that you would be surprised at how much oil will be floating on the water the next morning.

I've heard stories from the Old Timers also. Put them in a metal pan and bring to a boil. Turn off heat and let sit until cool to touch.
