Sorry, I lost my picture and post. I think this problem on my obsidian is caused by my slurry being too wet. I am now on fine (aluminum oxide 500). Everything looked fine after the medium grit. If I adjust the slurry, will the white marks go away? Thanks. Attachments:

It's difficult to tell from photos but it looks like the obsidian has been banging into itself as it tumbles. Are you using anything like plastic pellets as a cushion? connrock

How full is the barrel? Looks very typical for underloaded barrel. If you started 2/3 full and didn't keep level up while going through steps you will be under filled by third step. Rocks rise to top and drop rather than rolling. Use ceramic media or dedicated plastic media to maintain 2/3-3/4 full. I would fill stage 1 to 2/3 full and add ceramic to 3/4 full. Then add ceramics as you progress to maintain 3/4 full.

Thank you for your replies. Yes, I think the barrel was not as full as it should be and I also think the slurry was too runny. I have added a combination of ceramic media and dedicated plastic media to get it all from 2/3 to 3/4 full (about 70% media). I have also adjusted the slurry. I am continuing on with the fine grit. Keeping my fingers crossed. We have only tumbled harder rocks in the past. The obsidian is much different.

Obsidian is hard because it is soft. You will likely need to back up to medium at least and maybe a short run in coarse to remove the pitting.

John I personally appreciate all the knowledge you share here. I just couldn't help but take a tiny shot at ya for this phrase tho'. Hope you take it in the realm of fun! Have a great day!

No problem. Agates are easy because they are hard.

Sounds like something from Jeopardy...
"Alex, I'll take hobbies for $500..."
"When it's soft it's hard, and when it's hard it's easy."
"Alex, what is Rock Tumbling?"
LOL--
