38th annual Pow Wow. This is the second year with the new dates and new location. Formerly it was the first weekend in May which often turned into a mud bowl. It is on the ranch next door to the Snyder's ranch. The entrance gate is at the same location. Today was setup day and dealer's day (some real bargains!). I was there setting up the club's case in the CO OP field trip booth. As usual there are a lot of rough rock and slab dealers. Lot of local event booths - American Legion raffling a flag pole, Quilts of Honor selling bottled water and soda, church group selling food, etc. It is the 30th year that I have been attending. Bob

I hope it is a great success and one day I'd love to get up there and see what it's like.

I've heard it is dry but very hot. We did the mud bowl one time. There must be a compromise between scorching hot and mud?

Man, I miss that show. Very good for rough and slabs and a favorite destination for me for years when we had the Hornitos Ranch. Used to be a real good place in town for Chinese food too...Mel

You would do well either buying or selling there Christopher. It is a little like Desert Gardens North. Lots of rough.

I am going to have to do some better planning next year. I wanna check it out. Maybe I will set up some tables. I think it is about 3 hours away from Bakersfield, so it would be better for me to be a vendor instead of just going up for the day.

Spaces were pretty cheap as I recall. We were next door at the original cow pasture show.

Yes, it was always on the first weekend in May. The year we did the show it rained 4 days out of 5. Heavy rains at that. We complained when we got there about the 2 foot high grass and they told us be glad, just flatten it out. By Sunday all the pathways were nothing but mud. Well the dark spots were not mud (thanks to the cattle). A lot of dealers started driving out Sunday. Some had to be pulled out with a tractor. Hard core customers were showing up wearing waders and rain jackets. They put straw out at main entrance but the other roadways were really bad. I had a 31' motor home then and the exit from the pasture to the main driveway was a sharp 90 degrees and nothing but mud. I had to go slow for the turn but fast enough to not bog down. Ended up sliding the rear end like a Hollywood stunt man. We bought the 40' monster after. I figured if we could get it in the pasture it might become a permanent fixture. Of course the next year (after we cancelled) the predicted heavy rains/flooding/possible dam overflow never happened and they had a beautiful sunny show. Word I got tonight is the Snyder family is thinking of dropping the show in another year or two.

I thought the family already dropped it that is why it is across the way now?

I don't know. That is what I heard from the Barranca guy last night. Somebody in the area should pick up the show if they do drop it. Although, he also said attendance was down. Could be people have too many things going on a holiday weekend.

I'm heading there soon! Supposed to be a high of 98. I hope someone else does pick it up, it's rock heaven!
