Hey Rockers!
Had a wonderful rock hounding adventure this past weekend and wanted to share with y'all. We headed out early Friday morning for the hills near Luna New Mexico in search of the 3 Rs.. rest, relaxation and rock hounding! It's been a long hot summer here in the valley of the sun, and the thought of cool whispering pines and temps below triple digits really had us going.
A few hours out of the bigshitty city winding through the Salt River Canyon
Further still passing through Alpine. This part of the state suffered through the worst wildfire in Arizona's history in 2011, claiming half a million acres.
Strange contrast with dead standing trees and blooming flowers everywhere
After a 5+ hour drive we found ourselves back at the first spot we camped at several years ago when we first ventured into this area. It's pretty remote and isolated, and we were pleased to find that even though it had gotten a little singed, most trees were still standing and alive.
Christa took a little hike and spotted a couple elk
I hiked around a filled up my back pack with agate until I could hardly stand up lol. I guess that's resting and relaxing when you're a rock hound.. you hike way too far and carry way too many rocks. Then make it back to camp, sit down for 15 minutes and off you go again.
I did take some time to smell the flowers
Happy campers
Damn I look goofy lol
Yesterday morning we broke camp and headed for petrified wood country between Snowflake and Holbrook. Got there just in time for some cool refreshing monsoon showers
Hounded some colorful wood then hit the road back home. Here's the late afternoon skies near Sedona
And the sun setting further down the road
It was a grand adventure, thanks for coming along with us!!!
