I picked this rock up on the banks of the columbia river. I thought it was a black rock and wanted to see if it would polish. Well it was not black and it did not take a polish like a agate or jasper but it did take a sort of a luster shine? It has a hardness around 6.5. I can scratch it with quartz (with a bit of effort) but could not scratch the quartz with it.   could it be Jade of some sorts? Mike |

I've been told it might be jasper...but most jasper I've been around shines as well as agate. A very "wet candy" look. So I was thinking it might be something else.

maybe a serpentine and just might be a mix of all of the above I found this in the nooksack river its sorta like yours but its not a 6 in hardness  |

It's pretty:).
I don't think it's serpentine because serpentine is only supposed to have a hardness of 2.5-4. It does look a little bit like plasma agate... but why can't it be jade? Jade can be a 6.5 I think.

I've got to find my hardness / streak testing kit. Packed away someplace. Now is the time I'd wish I had labled things better. ;-)

do a specific gravity on it.
2.9+ = jade or jadelick stuff
2.9- = no jade
