Anybody been there? My parents and their friends are en route, about 4 hrs out and are staying in the area for a few days. Anything worth talking about, good or bad? Stuff to see? I looked up a little stuff. Looks like a neat place.
Rock shops?

Tons of things to see and do in and around Deadwood. Just about every town in the Black Hills has 2 or 3 rock shops. My wife and her mom will be a little further south in the hills over the weekend. They'll be staying at Hart Ranch. One of the best in the area isn't too far from Deadwood. www.therockshed.com/

About six years ago, our family drove from Michigan to several national parks out west. We went to Mt. Rushmore, Yellowstone, Glacier, and Banff. One of our overnight stops was Deadwood. I wouldn't drive that far just for Deadwood, but we had a very enjoyable day there. Wild Bill Hickok was shot there, so that's their claim to fame. They do reenactments of gunfights in the street, there are bus tours of the town and cemetery where Wild Bill is buried, and lots of casinos. There was a museum of antique cars and cars from movies. Kevin Costner owns a casino there and it was his bus tour we took. My wife won over a hundred dollars in a casino that paid for our hotel. We had a lot of fun there.

Not all of the rock shops are that expensive. The Rock Shed is just the best known in the hills. If they're looking to pick up Fairburn agates for you, they're one of the most expensive agates to buy. TeePee Canyon agate is nice, and less expensive. If I didn't live 7 hours away from there, I'd be glad to play tour guide for them.

I was going to advise against playing poker there but somebody beat me to the Hickock thing. Too this day the poker hand he held when shot is called "the dead man's hand". Sorry, nothing to do with rocks.

She just told me that she bought a ipad about a month before the trip(didnt know she had one, shes 63, guess your never to old for an ipad) and shes been looking stuff up while they go but they pretty much had everything planned. Shes been emailing me pics from her ipad. My older brother went up to S. Dakota riding his motorcycle and did all the pre planning for ol mom and dad. Didnt know that until today. Let's see. You are implying 63 is old? Gee I just turned 62 and think 82 is old. I just got my first smart phone too. So far it is proving to be too smart for me.
