Although cost is not an obstacle, I don't want to purchase something I don't need. That being said I don't know which Foredom to buy. The SR series is probably sufficient with a 1/6hp motor. The TX series has a 1/3hp 'whammer jammer' permanent magnet motor. I primarily am working in copper, brass and silver. I don't carve, but it's on my to-do list.
Suggestions are appreciated.

Nancie, the SR series should be more than enough for your needs. The TX series would be more of an industrial tool.

I am in the process of having to make the same choice. I think the TX also does not have reverse and it has a lot more torque. Stu

It really depends on what you need. I started using the a knock off brand and it worked fine for years with silver and gold work. When I got into carving rock, I stepped up to the TXH440 Industrial and holy cow what a difference. If you are going to start with a Foredom and your going to lay out $200+ you may really consider bumping it up another $100 to handle what you want later on. In the long run you will either burn out the motor doing carving with the lesser one or end up dropping another $300 for the one that can handle the carving. My two pennies

I no longer sell Foredom but was told by them the 1/6 hp SR would serve most people very well. The TX was advisable for sculptors using larger tools. The 1/6 hp would have much more power and torque than any Dremel and last a very long time. The SR list went up over $300 last year but of course you can find them for less.

I have the TX and its a work horse!
it was my sole piece of equipment for cabbing/carving for many years and is still going strong
it does not have a reverse but I have never needed it so that part did not matter to me
I had been running the little diamond pacific bigfoot hard wheels mounted on 1" rubber drums with it and it had the power to do it plus!

Whatever model you choose opt for the #30 hand piece. It fits their drill press and hand piece holders, etc. Also takes any size bits from zero to about 1/4".
