I've been following some "polish" posts and see that the prices on the better polishes are going up & up. Has anyone tried titanium dioxide as a polish. It might be less expensive. I remember trying it years ago and the titanium got into every little pit and crevice and was difficult to get it out.

I think all polishes get into the cracks and crevices, but since the titanium is white, it's much easier to see than, say, cerium.
Titanium dioxide is the first polish I used for tumbling and still have some.

Not sure of the reliability of my info here, but it looks like TiO2 hardness is anywhere from 5.5 to 6.5 depending on crystal structure. I would think this would then only work for softer stones. Take all of that with a grain of salt since I've never used the stuff! Sent from my DROID3 using proboards

It's messy, stains your clothes, shoes and hands white. Works great as a tumbling polish and yes shows off all of your flaws. It is also realtively inexpensive, although it also seems to be going up on price. You can buy it in bulk from a paint or soap manufacturer.

The stuff can't be too hard 'cause they use it in toothpaste.
