Howdy folks, Been so busy with horse stuff last few weeks I've had no chance to rock hunt so today, since it's fairly cool, I headed over to my favorite Eagle Pass rock pile for a four hour hunt. Pretty muddy after almost five inches of rain but I dd find abut 3/4 of a five gallon bucket full of goodies. here are a few pics of some of my finds. Thanks for looking....Mel Some devil's Toenails: Really nice Eagle Pass orbicular agate. The one on the right is really sweet. Found quite a bit of water worn pet wood my wife will claim for her garden. Not real colorful but really highly agatized and solid. One on the right looks just like youngite or pastelite except it has some orbs too. Left is an odd conglomerate of pebbles covered and sealed together by druzy quartz. Big agate with moss, tubes and fortifications: Typical Rio Grande moss. Didn't find as many as usual. Brecciated jasper with fortifications: Big red Rio Grande and on the left is an orbicular jasper that is gold orbs on green but the green don't show in the pic . And finally, the most common of all Rio Grandes, the big ole golden mossy plumey type:

I'll bet the Eagle Pass orbicular agate on the left is totally cool on the inside! Those are all cool! What is Eagle pass rock pile?

Susan: I forgot to tell you how much I love your logo saying " You can rest....later" *L* I always figured there'd be plenty of time to rest when I were dead. Good rule to live by considering how short life really is *L*. I've got horse clinic on young Hopper tomorrow morning. Hope he don't shorten my life any during the process. He don't much like horse psychology class *L*.
Daniel: *L* Just lucky I guess. Them orbs just seem to gravitate my way.
Randy. Funny story re the Eagle Pass gravel. When I was moving to Texas I stayed at this motel where the landscape was under construction. There was a big pile of decorative gravel in the parking lot that was just full of Rio grande agates. Very cool right? Then after I moved, I found, since xeroscapes are very popular herebouts, a good many of the parking lots and shopping centers in town have gravel landscaping full of agate. So , since rockhounding in the shopping mall flower beds is according to my wife, uncool and embarassing, I hunted down the source which is a gravel quarry in Eagle Pass, Texas and made friends of the nice fellow who hauls the stuff around. At first he used to charge me a tiny fee for hounding his gravel pile but now he lets me do it for free whenever I want. (Of course, I'm sure it helps that I'm a regular buyer of his landscape rock due to my wife's gardening projects too). The hunts are hit or miss as some layers in the quarry seem to be much richer in gem materials than others. Wasn't real spectacular today whereas last time it was friggin awesome with great big Rios laying right on the surface. I must have moved several tons of rock for my mini haul today but it's still fun and like a treasure hunt as one good agate makes it all worth while. Today the pile was totally dry and then I got into one section and found a lot of my haul in a small area, which was super fun!. Oh I should add that the really cool thing I like about Rio Grande gravel is it's been so tumbled by the river through the ages that what's left is usually the most solid core of the agate nodules. Most agate you find is really pretty nice stuff...Mel

Those are some mighty fine finds Mel! Can't wait to see inside the red and yellow orbicular. The big agate in pic 5 should give some fantastic slabs as well. Awesome!

That just goes to show that persistence and inquisitiveness can get you some great results! Thanks for sharing the story Mel.

That was a fruitful trip. Colorful and interesting finds! Those stuck together pebbles are pretty neat. Look like sugared almonds.
