On eBay I won an auction for 5 Septarian nodules (about 3 - 5 lbs each). I was the only bidder so I got the starting price -- $20 plus $11 shipping. A good price.
He did not tape the sides of the box (all in all, it was not a good packing job for rocks -- would have been fine if he was shipping books or sweaters), so one of the nodules escaped during shipping. I guess it is now running free somewhere in the USPS system. (insert refrains of Born Free here)
I'm essentially getting polite shoulder shrugs from the seller. He's showing zero interest in making things right. So far I've made no demands.
Looks my choices are (not mutually exclusive): 1. Forget it and move on. The 4 nodules are good and are worth what I paid. It looks like it was the smallest one that escaped. 2. Neutral him in ebay rating. I don't see this at the level of a negative. 3. Insist on a replacement nodule or a partial refund. Do the sellers here consider this type of loss to be a buyer risk?

I would ask for partial refund.
Was insurance offered that you refused?

Insurance was not offered. He has 22 feedbacks as a seller going back to March 2012, all positive.

I would nicely ask for a partial refund based on the poor packaging and go from there...

good packing is an expectation of doing business.
if he will not send a replacement (possibly with yall splitting shipping) or offer somethign else (e.g., store credit, promise of an extra nodule with any future purchase... etc), then I would pursue a claim through PayPal.
get photographs of the box damage and of any lack of appropriate packing materials.
you might need to return everything for full refund, but a reasonable seller will offer a partial refund to settle the matter.
if the seller than blocks you, I would give a full negative for the untoward retaliation.

Toad -- I think I bought some AZ pet wood from you on eBay. I polished the ends of a few pieces and sold them at a charity auction to help pay for medical expenses for a nephew. They were quite popular and brought in a bit of money for him.

Glad it helped, Steve. I'm having fits trying to tumble the material though. This stuff is trying my patience.
