Man, all year I've wondered if this day would come. I tried yesterday to shine some obsidian on the new genie, but it didn't take. I think in my early days i must have contaminated my 14000 diamond disc with a coarser grit. This was the best i could do: ![](http://daharsh.net/s/IMG_20120923_144609.jpg) At the Denver show i got a suede leather disc from John @ jsgems and some aluminum oxide polish. In retrospect i didn't think but the polish powder is the same stuff i already have for tumbling, oh well ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) I painted a paste made from the polish and water onto the suede after thoroughly washing my hands, the stone etc and let it dry. I started up the genie with the disc on and spayed it a time or two with water. I put the cab to it for a few minutes and then washed it off and this is the result: ![](http://daharsh.net/s/IMG_20120923_150629.jpg)

great shine. I think a little heat helps with some material, and you get that more on plates than wheels.

Very nice and shiny!!! It takes a little practice mastering the polishes, sometimes stuff gets so shiny and other times you beat yourself up thinking what did I do? You got this one right!!! I always find the hard line is between the level of wet and heat, I have lost many cabs flying off during polish!!!

I've got to say, after playing with silicone and diamond, this "feels" a lot better and I find it easier overall to get the shine.
I ordered a smooth leather belt for my expando from John @ jsgems but I may add a suede one so I have the option. The only think I lack with my current setup is a way to polish the inside of the curves I will inevitably cut and shape on the Novas on the genie.

Thanks for the great tip, John! We just started using the AO on Stainmaster carpet disks, and will make one just for obsidian on Tuesday. We'll report back on the results.

Thanks all, one other thing I noticed, FWIW - the stone got nowhere near as warm with this method.
I do think the shine could be better, I have a smooth leather belt for my expando I ordered from John @ jsgems that I am going to silicone > 14000 diamond impregnate and see if I can keep it decontaminated so it may improve the shine. We'll see!

Definitely made a big difference. I usually use cerium on obsidian with the same polishing method.
