Man I got to tell you folks I'm whipped! We had a big whitetail buck come in that was all wrapped in electric horse fencing. Had has horns all tangled and a couple of loops around his neck which of course, could eventually be lethal. I tried to reel him in so I could cut him free but he freaked and broke the strapping I had hold of while almost yanking off my arm. So I got the ranch manager and a wrangler and we darted that big ole boy today. Too big for the tranc dosage I guess, so we tracked that sucker about five miles which involved climbing fences onto the neighboring ranch and of course, tearing my pants about half off on the barbed wire and then almost getting trampled flat by the neighbor's Brahmas. Then just as he was getting wobbly, that dern deer rejumped the fence back onto our ranch. First dart was wearing off so we darted him again and tracked him some more and the dang critter goes back over the dang fence still again. So we again gave chase and I swear he took us through every cedar break and cactus patch on that dang hill. Ain't none of us spring chickens so that booger flat wore us out and he never did go down. Some critters just don't want to be rescued I guess *L*.
Anyway, we got us some bigger darts and will try again tomorrow. Like our ranch manager said after we staggered back to the house all hot, stickered, sweaty and chiggered up, "Dang, now this has gotten personal!" Wish us luck....Mel

Good luck in your rescue mission in the morning. Watch out for the other critters that might be running around.

Good Luck Mel. Glad your on the job. My cousin tried to jump on the back of a little doe whitetail deer with a knife in his mouth. The dear was caught between the car and the fince. My cousin was drunk and thought he would be able to kill the deer by doing that. Well the little whitetail just beat the hell out of him and he had stitches all over his body. it appears that the hoofs can really do damage. So one for the deer and zero for the drunk dumbass!!!

Gee, it was "too old" for me about a third of the way into the story. Two thumbs up for the effort you're making; I hope you are successful.

Mike: The hooves of a whitetail can cut like knives and they stand on their hind legs to use them. See the does fight here all the time and it get unbelievably nasty. The bucks are starting rut now and in addition to having sharp horns and hooves, are flat out nuts. The blackbuck males are even more homicidal if you get in their way. Pays to be cautious when outside the game fenced yard around these parts *L*.....Mel

Well he might not be alive if he'd taken on a buck during rut. I'm not against hunting or anything like that...as long as it is within the law. :nono:

Gosh Mel... it's very noble of you to try to save the deer, but if its just going to keep injuring himself... um... I hear deer stew is really yummy...

I think that it is a good thing to help manage the deer / elk populationl. That way there is good meat for the hunt. Never tried venison stew. I have tried venison jerky and sausage and it is real good.

Helen and all you venison lovers. *L* My pop was a taxidermist and we were poor when I was a kid. I was raised on wild game and about the only kid in school that had to pick birdshot out of his lunch meat. When he shot a bear, I'd have eight months of dried out bear burgers and venison was several times a week sometimes. : I HATE WILD GAME MEAT!!!!!!!! and I hate fish more because I used to spearfish for lots of my food during my college years *L*
I do expect as soon as we rescue that dang buck he'll hop the fence to the hunting ranch next door and get shot, but that's more humane than a slow death by strangulation anyway. This big boy is also kind of a pet and that's the main reason why we've put forth the extra effort in his case....Mel

That's quite a picture you've painted Mel! I feel for all of you! Do you have to watch out for javelinas, too? I hate the idea of a big buck going down because of fencing. I'm glad you're making the effort to save him from a slow death. I happen to like wild meat, so if you end up with some in your freezer, I'll gladly pay for shipping! Chuck

Chuck, we have wild pigs but no javelinas. Quite a mountain lion problem lately though. Have had two blackbuck does taken in the last two weeks and they've nailed almost every mouflon lamb we had this year.
No meat from me. I only hunt with a camera since I retired. Had quite enough killing on the job to last me a lifetime. It'll take me the rest of my days doing animal rescues to even out my karma *S*.....Mel

Man...... I gotta get out of the city. Did I ever mention I once saved a baby duck that got caught in some fishing line? It was kinda tough because its mother was trying to kill me.
Sorry, the the best nature story I got.

Mel, hope you get a photo of that buck, sounds like a dandy. I know people that also have had their fill of wild game growing up here. I was raised solely on wild fish and game meat and actually prefer it to this day. Antelope is my favorite, followed by elk, then deer meat. Moose are good stew meat and burger, and bear is best to smoke cure the hams, yum. I do concur with your sentiment about picking shot out of birds, even worse now to bite into since they went to steel shot.

Do like they do in the movies Mel, pull your six shooter and shoot the wire off of that deer. lol All kidding aside, I hope you got it untangled. Hell of a way to die.
Bill, venison roast cooked with bacon draped over it then scoop some juice and put it on a bowl of rice. Doesn't get much better than that. Jim

Oh yeah, sorry I didn't report. The tangled buck came around for a bit again this morning and is still able to feed but not much. Didn't show up at all this evening but we prefer morning darting as it's easier to track the animal. Didn't get in range of the dart gun so I'll have to try to bait him in closer tomorrow.....Mel

you need to get you a big old agate and put some feed on the ground then when he comes aroud.....'BONK' on the head with the agate, break a few times off so he isn't hunter quality anymore and you have 1 seriously out cold buck to work on and remove the wire from
