I went to the Denver Gem and Mineral show the week before last, and the kids and I wandered into one of the Moroccan Fossil tents. I couldn't believe the prices! I ended up getting each of the kids a ~10" orthoceras in black marble and I picked up these 2 ammonites for a total of $30: ![](http://daharsh.net/s/IMG_20120926_020207.jpg) I haven't weighed or measured them, but they are about a foot tall (as oriented here) and weigh 4-5 pounds each. Speaking of orthoceras, does anyone have a single one they would sell? My 4-year old was showing his rock collection to a friend of mine the other night and dropped his on the hardwood floor and now it is in pieces. He was so sad it was heartbreaking - this thing was his biggest, coolest "rock" and I can't find any replacements even close to the size of his for twice the price. I'll be going back with a lot more cash next year!

The gem and mineral show will be passing through Austin about the 20th of Oct. I`ll keep my eyes out for a replacement for your son. And some of those ammonites too! Was it a smooth ortho like a belemnite or was there a pattern to its shell? What was the price range on them?

It was nicely segmented pattern, not smooth like a belemnite, light body in dark gray/black marble matrix.
John at JSGems said he's look out too, I forget now which show he is going to though (sleep deprivation)
I paid $4 a piece for the orthoceras, and like I say they were 9-10" long and nicely done. Not perfectly shiny and totally smooth, but nice for a kid.

John, I think I have a couple of smaller ones, pendant size. Do you think your son would like to have one to hang around his neck? I would be happy to send it your way.

If someone is near Wisconsin Dells we visited a Moroccan guy in the downtown area that has a rock shop selling these. I don't recall the prices but with the off season coming there might be a sale.

Thanks all
Donnie, that is very nice of you to offer. I found several pieces of the broken fossil and it actually looks like i may be able to fix it!
I will give that a try because it is for a 4-year-old and now that i have all the pieces i think i can get it recovered for him
Next year if they are back i will buy more and Ebay them!

I have a young friend in northeast Mo. near the Illinois border who has found orthos up to 6 ft. in his area. He is about 17 now, was 15 at the time I met him and saw his collection. We did a fossil swap soon after. He had collected an easy minimum of 150 lbs. of them. I somehow managed to find a phragmacone intact while hunting in west Austin years ago. They are very fragile especially in all of the lime of the chalk zone we sit in.
